large scale studies as well, much bigger than the much publicised recent
one.
Summary appears to be, looks like there is a link, but not sure why.
Interestingly, also reports an increased link with diabetes patients with
high blood pressure.

The research that I've seen has shown that there is a derangement of glucose
absorption/metabolism in neurons in people with Alzheimer's - specifically
that these neurons are starved of glucose. (Neurons are dependent solely on
glucose for their energy requirements.)
In diabetes, glucose levels are high in the bloodstream because glucose is
not getting into the cells effectively. This is why diabetes is sometimes
referred to as "starvation in the midst of plenty". The treatments for
diabetes assist cells to absorb glucose more efficiently.
Therefore (and this is my conjecture only) a diabetic is likely to suffer
the effects from Alzheimer's more severely because their intraneuronal
glucose concentration is going to be much lower. The diabetes medication
helps to raise the glucose concentration reducing the effects of dementia.

Maybe this has already been ruled out, but I suppose that leads to the
simple possibility that Az/Diabetes are not especially linked(eg one
actually causes the other), but that in people with a damaged brain (damaged
by the accumulation of proteins that kills cells, aka Az), then further
stress on brain cells by starving them of glucose will "enhance" the
Alzheimers symptoms. And relieving the diabetes with drugs thus 'relieves'
the alzheimers.
Similar effect is seen with many of the AZ medicines which dont actually do
anything to target the cause of Az, just the secondary effect as we
understand it(lowered messenger chemicals).
Some of the press reports (and we all know how accurate the press can be)
seem to indicate much more of a direct causal link, as if there are
underlying connected causes, but perhaps as you say its really very simple,
Diabetes is simply exacerbating Az by weakening an already damaged brain.
