Hello,
My name is Kevin and I am a full time caregiver for my Mom who has
Alzheimer's...
I am a cna and a year ago was still working but decided to let my job go
when Mom's confusion got so bad that I could not in good conscience
leave her alone for any length of time.
While I was working, a friend told me that it might be possible to
qualify for the elderly waiver program with Medicaid so that I could get
paid to take care of her.
It wasn't easy and it was almost like it was a secret.... but I finally
was able to get the information I needed, and jump through the
appropriate hoops to get into the program.
I only get $400.00 a month but it is better than nothing, and I am
fortunate that I do not have many outgoing expenses...
But I was wondering how many other caregivers know about this program
through Medicaid and was interested in feedback from other caregivers.
Also....
After I became involved, I discovered that every little task was to be
recorded from start to finish and figured with a calculator to get your
billing amount... This was tedious and time consuming to say the least,
so I wrote a software program to help me in the billing process. I have
been using it for a year and a half and it has been a life saver!
I want everyone to understand that I am not trying to "Get sales" from
this post, but information on other caregivers per say...
I am planning on setting up a program so that I can sell the software
for $24.95 so that it will be affordable, and in return will donate 90%
of the sale to the charity of the caregiver's choice.
That should be a win, win, win solution for everyone.
Please let me know your experiences and understandings regarding this
subject.
Sincerely,
Kevin Richards

Hello Kevin, and I do seem to remember you posting here before.
What we did was set up by an eldercare specialist lawyer. My mother in law
made it very clear to the lawyer she would prefer to pay us to care for her
rather than just go directly to a nursing home and pay them. She got him
to prepare the necessary papers that I was contracted by her to be her
caregiver.
I reported the income and paid appropriate taxes on every penny throughout
the whole time she was here. It was expensive with lawyer and accounting
fees involved, but it worked out well for us and for her.
