I have gotten away from the group.   Guess I took a little break.   We had
another unexpected death in the family.
I had a few minutes this morning so I checked in.   For those of you who
remember my mother has had alz. for 13 years now.   She's still in assisted
living and at 87 seems to be getting along pretty good all things
considered.   My brother is coming around to the fact that she's really
slipping away.  Although earlier this week he said she should be able to
take her own pain medication.   I said no and pointed out that she might not
remember that she had already taken one and take another.   He agreed with
me then.   She had a cancerous lesion taken off her cheek and needed extra
nursing care.   We set it up and everything is fine.   The one sticking
point was that he had POA.
Well it turns out it wasn't done correctly and the bank wouldn't accept it.
I got on my computer and printed a new POA from a program called Family
Lawyer, added myself as well as brother as POA.   I explained to Mom that we
needed it take care of her business.   Her reply was that would be good
because she didn't have any insurance.  Hmmm I will be prepaying her funeral
but I've never mentioned this to her.   Anyway we had a family friend go
with us to the assisted living to witness the document and the owner was
kind enough to be our other witness.   One of the employees was a notary.
I took it to the bank, they made a copy to put on file and cashed in a CD
that was due.   I found out there is another CD that is due next month.
This will really help take care of her.   I still think she has money in a
bank in Florida and some stock to check into.   This POA will make things so
much easier for me.   My brother just isn't up to the paperwork and is happy
to have me do it.   So far so good......June

Opps I was experimenting awhile back with a new identity for newsgroups (
new Nom De Plume so to speak) and I forgot to change back to my original
name---June.    So it's me, June.   I had gotten some Spam at my original
hotmail address that I know was picked up from this newsgroup, so I did
change my e-mail to a non working one.....June

Dear June,

I'm working on getting another POA from John.  He had a paranoia attack
in Puerto Rico & tore his up.  He got pretty agitated the other night
when I handed the info for our new wills & all of that to the friend
who's doing them.  Hopefully, he won't give us a hard time when it comes
to signing.  I think though once he understands it saves him from a lot
of paper work, etc., he'll be okay with it.

Hope you find that trail of money.  With my sister's recent death, I
have been motivated to start writing lists & all to make things easier
for our daughter when the time comes.

Always,

Char

since your brother is in such denial, it was great that you could
get this problem out of the way.  did you get a durable POA for
health care, too, so that you can deal with doctors, etc.?

Hi Dennis....No I didn't.  I really thought about it but my mother has
always made it known how she feels about such things.   My brothers and I
are in agreement on it.   She does have a healthcare POA as part my
brother's original POA.   Since it doesn't involve money, it should be all
that is needed.   The attorney who did my brother's original POA is a
distant cousin and the same age as my mother.   So he was in his 80's at the
time he made the document.   He got some names wrong and scratched them out
and wrote in the correct name instead making a new document.   The bank
didn't like that.
My brother's has come a long way with his denial.   He has said that Mom is
where she needs to be.   He's one those people who just doesn't get it when
it comes to alz.   The fact that Mom still uses the phone and will call his
cell phone if she can't get hold of him, makes it seem that she's not as bad
as she really is.  She's having a little trouble with balance now, and is
getting more and more confused about things and... well she's 87.   She had
a blood test the other day and it came back within normal limits.  I've
noticed doctors don't have a problem talking to me about my mother.  So one
day at a time......June
