Hey, I used to be one too, but no longer. I recall there is one here somewhere? I am wondering if the staggering cost of this nursing home will be deductible as a medical expense. The instructions for schedule A are less than detailed.
If not, I will need part time work between now and the fall semester when God willing I will be teaching.

>From www.wwwebtax.com:

"Nursing home expenses are allowable as medical expense tax deductions
on your tax return in certain instances. If you, your spouse, or your
dependent is in a nursing home or home for the aged, and the primary
reason for being there is for medical care, the entire cost, including
meals and lodging, is a medical expense and is tax deductible on your
tax return. If the individual is in the home mainly for personal
reasons, then only the cost of the actual medical care is a medical
expense and tax deductible on your tax return, and the cost of the
meals and lodging is not tax deductible on your tax return."

Hope that helps. I'm not an accountant, but I handle the books for our
company, so I have learned where to Google my questions.

if she has no money, you should apply for medicaid, since in most
states children are *not* responsible for nursing home costs of
their parents, and medicaid will pay if she has no assets.

you might contact your local ALZ association office to see if
they have tax info for caregivers.

or are you talking about doing *her* taxes?

Also, there are some nursing homes that will take the person as long as
Medicaid has been applied for.
