Barb, you might ask this of your doctor, but since you asked here, I will
just give you my personal take on it as a lay-person.
When Ida was here with us, she used to get very agitated in the evenings.
She was on Risperdol twice a day. We gave her her medications right after
dinner every night (including the second dose of Risperdol) for several
reasons; The first reason was that on a full stomach, her meds didn't upset
her stomach. The second reason was to make evenings a little more peaceful
and comfortable for us all.
That couple of hours difference may not mean anything much as far as the
safety of the dosing schedule is concerned, but if she "runs out" of the
medication around 3 AM and starts getting up out of bed too early and having
a problem then it just might. The only way you would know, is to try it
and see.
In Ida's case, she was wonderful in the mornings, seldom any kind of a
problem at all. Afternoons and early evenings were another story
altogether. Fortunately she had been an "early to bed" girl for many
years, (probably due to her farm origins).
When she went to bed early we were usually very relieved, so by giving her
second dose of Risperdol right after her dinner worked out well for all
concerned. (We usually eat around 5PM) After dinner she'd sit and watch
TV and by 7 or so, she'd want to go to bed.
But I am also thinking that a lot depends on when you give her the first
dose of Zyprexa, too. If you give it to her.... like say around 8 AM then
5 isn't too far off for the second dose. If you give it to her late
morning, then 5 may be too soon. You could ask the pharmacist or your
doctor, and see what they say if you aren't sure about the time factor,
also.

This drug is not usually prescribed for people with dementia, are you
finding that it works well? Or is your Mom perhaps a victim of early onset?
Just a curious nurse here. What time of day does she take her first dose? On
the timing question in general, Zyprexa is usually given once per day, the
half life of the drug causes it to act for 24 hours. Interesting dosing
schedule.

Yes it does work well. She has always taken it in the halves.I gave it to
her though around 7 or 8 pm.I tried 5 tonight so we will see how it
works. When my mom was in the hospital for 9 days she left a bumbling
idiot for lack of better words. They had taken her off the zyprexa.Got
her home and put her back on it and her speech was back to normal.Barb

It should be fine. Since it really works for 24 hours lapping it a little on
the half dose most likely won't do anything. It is possible she is
metabolizing it a little unevenly between waking and sleep, and she is low
at 5, if you are seeing behavior differences then.

The orodispersible is a neat thing. I have a terrible time getting anything
into Mom.
