yup.... I'm a prof - and both my kids are students (at other colleges)
.....so we were all affected
one benefit of doing the caregiving thing - I was excused from most of the
picket line duty as a 'hardship' case - i.e. paying someone to mamasit (or
watch the store so hubby could mama sit) would hae cost more than the strike
pay they were going to give me
plus I have very bad feet (got my new orthotics yesterday; here's hoping
they help) .. so I got paid strike pay for doing an occassional morning
coffee run and getting back home in time for hubby to go to the store
worked for me, but I am REALLY glad it's over
in other news......Ma had an accident last night - and as a result my
neighbours house DIDN'T burn to the ground even though it was on fire and no
one was home. I went outside to leave the bag of smelly on the front step
(for hubby to dispose of properly when he came home) ..... heard a smoke
detector going off and smelled smoke.... so walked up the driveway a bit and
saw strange orange glow from a window. Wasnt 100% sure it was a fire, but
suspicious enough to go over and bang on the door and see if anyone was home
or whatever.... door was very hot, so I called 911. Being small town rural,
at least for the time being (there is an awful lot of development happening
'round here) our fire response tends NOT to be the greatest, but they did
show up PDQ and in time to put it out before the whole thing burned

Wow Lee.... that was wonderful. I bet those people will be incredibly
grateful for your diligent notice of that fire! We had the same thing
around here one night a year ago. A nearby house was in a huge fire before
anyone could even notice. My next door neighbor just happened to see the
flames rising up through the trees and called the FD, and they were able to
put it out, but not before a huge amount of damage was done. They are just
finishing up rebuilding it. The people were away at the time it happened.
Imagine what a horrible shock to come home and find your house destroyed!
Our neighborhood is all wooded with very tall trees, and it is not something
one can notice very quickly.
