It's isn't just the UTI, or the pain that the patient may be
experiencing in a way that uses up all the mental capacity left.

If the brain is deteriorating, all of the bodily functions that
depend on autonomous brain functions (like keeping the heart
beating, breathing, digestive tract contractions to move food and
waste through the bowels, etc.) can be affected.

It becomes more noticeable when the patient begins to have
trouble swallowing, or starts losing his or her balance
frequently.  Usually they become weaker and sleep a lot more when
they reach that stage, too.

In some ways infections may be a blessing.  If it gets worse, you
might consult with the doc about whether extensive treatment to
prolong her life would be what she would want, or whether it
might be kinder to let the infection take her instead of "saving"
her to die slowly as her body functions deteriorate.

Dennis,
I know your right about all of this.It just sounds so harsh to let
the infection just take them.I don't know that i could do that. Not at
this point anyways.Barb

WHO are you trying to prolong her life for, and for what?  So she
can suffer through more days of confusion and upset, only to
deteriorate to a vegetable?  Is this what she would want, or
would she have told you to just let her go?

Think about it.  Are you doing this for HER or for YOU?  If for
you, please contact hospice and get some counseling about helping
her to die with dignity.  They're in your local phone book, and
Medicare will pay if payment is necessary.  They also help with
home care when the end is near.

I know that I was lucky because in her last lucid moments my
mother told us to "take me home and call Hospice", but we had
discussed her attitude about death many times, and her living
will said no food, no hydration, just pain relief if necessary.

Really, Barb, think about what SHE would have wanted.  I'm sure
that she would rather not become a total vegetable.
