SpiritCares Project
Internet-Based Research Study

The SpiritCares project is a research study examining the demands and
potential rewards of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's Disease.
Your participation in the study may help researchers learn how people
cope with the challenges of caregiving.

Researchers are looking for persons who meet all of the following
criteria:

·    Are currently caring for someone with a physician's diagnosis of
Alzheimer's Disease or related dementias
·    Are  primarily responsible for their relative's well-being
·    Are caring for someone who does not live in a nursing home or
assisted living facility
·    Are fluent in English

If you are interested in participating in this internet-based research
project, please click on the link below and type in Survey #10847 (no
password needed) or cut and paste the following URL address:
https://www.psychdata.com/surveys.asp?SID=10847

If you have questions or concerns before deciding to participate,
please call Dr. Anne Edwards at Purdue University Calumet,
(219)989-2863, or email her at edwardsa@calumet.purdue.edu.  This study
was approved by the institutional review board at Purdue University on
November 23, 2005 (protocol #0509003039).

I wonder if these folks ever consider that most caregivers simply
do not have the time to participate in studies like this?

Probably true. But that does not mean that there are some who are in a position
to participate in such a study.

So, if you're not able to do so (as your response would suggest), why waste your
time replying?

Those who do have some time to participate don't need your negative
contribution.

Anthony, that same posting appeared everywhere on usenet.  It was a spammer
who posted it to lots of groups.  In this case, Dennis is quite correct.

The SpiritCares Project is valid.  It is an Internet-based research
study and requires caregivers from all walks of life.  While it's true
that there were many postings to a variety of caregiver forums and
message boards yesterday, it was posted to only this Alzheimer's group
on usenet.  This is not a spam attempt. If you have questions, there is
a phone the number provided within the study request.

Sincerely,
Wendy Bartlett - Research Assistant

Wendy, Wendy. Easily answered.

Demands? Someone/someplace to take over the care after you're worn down to a                  non-functioning nothing.
Rewards? None, unless watching a loved one slowly deteriorate turns you on.

There. All you need to know about Alzheimer's caregiving.

and you won't get a true random sample, because the caregivers
will be self-selected.  the most stressed and busiest ones will
NOT have time to participate, which will make your results either
biased or unreliable.  in any case, you won't get a true picture
of whatever the survey topic is.

Indeed, and since Az carers would generally be in their 70's and older, the
proportion of those using the internet compared to the average population is
going to be smaller. Then shrink that by the number who have the spare money
to buy a PC and connect to the net, are aware of usenet, who have the time
to post, who choose to post, and then who respond to a single message, you
probably end up with 3 self-selected people out of tens of millions :-)

I am amazed at the number of people who think posting a survey on the net is
a valid way to get any kind of objective results, let alone valid ones.
