A visit to Assisted Living

Hi....My mother went into assisted living last week and she doing quite well
as I have posted.   A few days ago she seemed to be getting much worse.
Today I called her and told her I would be over to visit.   When my husband
I arrived, she was sitting by the door chatting with another resident.   We
all talked for awhile and then she said do you want to go to my apartment
now?    We went down to her apartment and she asked if I had talked to my
brother.    She told me that he wasn't feeling well yesterday and she was
concerned.   I knew he wasn't feeling well but I hadn't talked to him today.
I was amazed that she would remember and then she pointed out that the phone
number I had written down for my brother was wrong.   She said it's 82 not
62 as I had written.   She was absolutely right and I had copied it wrong.
Then to top it all off, I went into the bathroom to put down a bath mat that
I had washed for her and the floor was wet.   I checked the shower and it
too was damp.   She had taken a shower without being reminded.   She is in
independent living so she gets only meals and weekly cleaning of her
apartment.   We can add more services as needed.   I know this seems like a
lot of little things but believe me for my mother it's a lot.   I think the
structure of the assisted living is really working for her.   I had been
checking on her almost everyday and reminding her to take a shower every
couple of days.   I thought I might have to help her with the showers but
that hasn't been the case.    I know I shouldn't get too hopeful but it's so
strange how she can be "with it" some days and so out of it on others.
Saturday when I visited I was thinking that it probably wouldn't be too long
before she might need more assistance and today I'm thinking she's doing
great.  'Sigh'.... I have noticed that the good days are getting fewer and
far between.  .........June

June,

Sometimes in the earlier stages you get a "perk up" from new
stimulations -- that's why you get so many LOs who are suddenly totally
together when you finally get them to the doctor. I saw this repeatedly
from my mom -- the problem is she can't hold it together for very long
and the effort is tiring.

Also, depression can overlay AD and make the symptoms worse -- having
things to do, places to go (even if it is down the hall!) and people to
meet may be helping.

Whatever the cause -- enjoy it!!!

Thanks, Mom was first diagnosed in '93 with dementia.  At that time she did
have the depression but it was over by '94.  As I have posted before her Alz
is so different from what I've seen mentioned here.   It's been a long road
and getting longer.   I do think the extra stimulation from the assisted
living is helping.   I was there today and she again had taken a shower
without being reminded.   Of course she still had on the same clothes as the
day before.   I used the guise of having her try on a new sweater that I had
just gotten her to get her to change clothes.   Like you say whatever the
cause, we're thankful for it.......June
