Am I the only one being spammed about the Red Patch Alert? 3 emails in less
than a week.
Please don't tell me it's any kind of a public service. It's received ample
coverage here in this NG but with my MIL in a secured facility, it's not on
the top of my list. I'm hoping whoever is pulling our email addresses will
see this message and get the point. Yes, I know -- I'm an optimist. Sigh!

No I am too as I wasnt sure if it was coming from a member here I didnt
report it too Gmail as spam but I will now if I get another one

I got it too -- and reported as spam. That is why I use a different
email address here than for my professional and personal email.
I didn't know if it came from here or because I did visit their
website. Either way, someone scooped info they shouldn't have. Come to
think of it, I didn't enter an email there -- must have come from here!
Also means I just struck them off my list of possible resources.

They actually have ways of mechanically harvesting email addresses from
newsgroups. For a long time I was literally bombarded with fake "patch"
emails, mostly pretending to be from Microsoft. No matter how many times I
blocked the name, it didn't stop them, because they would randomly generate
new return addresses and at one time I was deleting 50 or more fake emails
every day! I cannot imagine how people get any kind of thrill from doing
stuff like this. There are a lot of sickos out there......

I used to do that too, but it seems there are just all too many spammers out
there. I just delete them now. That and munging my email address for
newsgroups got the best results for me.

Arent I lucky I got the 4 I sent to Gmail back from the sender plus one
more
What a sense of humour ,only now they go into my spam box not a problem

Karen it is extremely important not to use your real email address for
newsgroups. There are (sick) people who harvest all the addresses and send
nasty viruses and such. I delete all kinds of junk every day from my email
box, and I even use a munged email address on newsgroups.

Evelyn

I don't use my real email address but I do cull through my Hotmail address
periodically for real messages and such. Hotmail is pretty good about
filtering out the Viagra ads and so forth, but Red Patch has been getting
through. I told Hotmail it was spam because I didn't ask for it.
Knowing someone that has had a troll track them down physically and publish
their personal information on the internet taught me to be cautious. In
another newsgroup, there was a character that changed his/her NG identity
more frequently than some people change socks. And he/she was very good at
starting out mild and escalating tension to screeching obscenities. You
meet some incredible people through the internet... incredibly good and
incredibly bad.

Hi Karen,
Yes, I have run across the same sort of things. It can be scary. Years ago
there were few who used the internet, now everybody does. And "everybody"
includes a lot.... good and bad. I delete anything that doesn't come from
someone I know. That goes double for anything with an attachment on it.
:-(

I have been getting it, as well. I've reported it to gmail, and they
have reported it to the offender's ISP.
