I spoke with my brother a short while ago.
We are pretty close & can speak easily with each other.
A few months ago, his children started after him about their mother, his
wife, & her memory.
He took her to Drs,  Physch, MRI, Blood , anything - you name it.
Finally DX---nothing found--just age related memory. problem.
No aricept or other med prescribed.

What do think?  I think time will tell.

He knows I have dealt with Alz for many years.with my husband Don, who,
incidentaly, seems to be doing so well in the AL place.  The guilt of
placing him was not easy to get over.  I think now after 3 months I
might feel guilty if I   took him out of AL. where he has freedom of
movement, appropriate entertainment & others to eat with, chat, such as
it is,& is not glued to me for everything.

Florence, I know it is wonderful for you to know tht he is so well situated
and now you can have time to relax and do things for yourself.  And you can
enjoy the time you spend with him.  No guilt allowed on this NG!.

I think thats a bad diagnosis, 'age related'.

Did they do a PET scan?

IIRC - MRI's are ok for Bone issues and spinal cord stuff. CT scans are
better for soft tissue problems (like abdominal organs, etc. But PET scans
show the brain best. It's what they used to diagnose my FIL with atrophied
frontal lobe.

Yes, it was a PET scan that was the deciding factor in Ida's diagnosis too.

Hi Florence,

I am so glad it has worked out so well for your husband.   We agonized over
our decision too, but it was the same with Ida.   She enjoyed the
interaction with others and the various entertainments etc.   At home it was
just the TV everyday, which she couldn't even follow a plot anymore.   I am
at peace knowing she was in a good space for the last year of her life.

I'll have to find out if a PET was done.  I believe  he's so glad for
the dr's  conclusion.  He does know there is no test to rule out AD
I do  believe  there are times when ignorance is bliss.

Since, the two drugs, Aricept & Namenda,
used together, has been available for such a short time are there any
studies or info that  early use is more beneficial . If  recall they
were advertised as good for latter stages.

The earlier the better, since you want to preserve as high a level of
functioning as possible.  All Alzheimer's patients end up at the same
place, but these drugs may hold off the latter stages a bit longer.

You'll just have to keep an eye on things and keep in touch with the
kids for signs of further deterioration.  If they appear, try another
doctor.  The first one I took my mother to shrugged off her condition
as "a touch of Alzheimer's."

Hi Florence,

Actually it is mostly in the early stages that the beneficial effects of
these drugs are so noticeable.   Some have concluded because of that, that
they are less effective in the later stages, but it isn't really true.   I
heard of a study that showed they continued to provide benefits even in
later stages.   I know it was definitely true for Ida that Aricept continued
to help.
