Have you used one? What kind? Experience?

This site mentions one to help prevent overeating & I know it would also be
for safety ie getting out something that wouldn't be instantly ready to eat
like meat, etc.

It would help if I provided the link...

we didn't use one ... but we did, for a time, have to be very careful about
what we put where....  both in the fridge and in the cupboards...  ended up
keeping only 'safe to eat as is' food where she was most likely to go
looking - the rest was all elsewhere... helped a great deal that we have 2
fridges though

I never needed one with MIL or FIL.  Just the opposite..she needed to
be encouraged to eat..However, I should have put one on for my boys

LOL!

My husband used to say my son had "frostbitten ears" because he was checking
the fridge every 5 minutes to see if something new had suddenly appeared
there!

That's a good one! LoL

Ah;but now I wish Mom could think to check the fridge when she gets
hungry when I'm asleep. But as far as I can tell it's been a good while
since she has. I don't think she even remembers that the milk is in
there. And most of the time I think she's forgotten that she can turn on
the faucet to get a drink of water.

What I've done for awhile now is try to keep bananaes on the table so
she will have something to eat if she wakes up hungry and I'm asleep;but
then I need to keep some of those hid too or she will peel all of them
sometimes!

Onething I've got to remember is simply to leave a large glass of water
on the kitchen table at night. Then if I'm asleep she will at least have
that to drink as she eats a banana or two.

Any other soft foods I could safely leave out at night, for her to have a
snack when she gets up? I simply can't think of anything;but surely
there is more than bananaes?! (ha)

I did think of one more thing and that's my whole wheat homemade bread.
Gotta get a move on and make some more of that, as Mom loves it. And on
my last attempt I did figure out not to overcook it so it would be soft
enough for her to eat without me having to cut the crust off! :-) My
first crust were as hard as a rock! LoL But I cut the crust off of that
and Mom still ate about a half a loaf that night! :-)

So that's bananaes, homemade bread and water I can leave out at night.
And just wondering if it's OK to leave out something like a glass of
apple juice? If it was in a large glass with a lot of ice in it, when I
went to bed?

Octavia - 21 Sep 2005 04:52 GMT
I leave something like one of those mini cups of applesauce on her
nightstand, along with a spoon & her water. There are all sorts of things
that don't have to be refrigerated unless opened, and the individual
servings work out nicely. My SIL has been keeping us stocked up on
individual servings of applesauce, jello, pudding.... And since I first
posted about the lock, and then leaving out a snack on her nightstand just
in case, things have gone (for the most part) much better. She hasn't gotten
up during the night or too early & gotten into the frig in a long time now.
Of course, as I post this & go to sleep, tonight could be another one of
those times - LOL!

If she would notice things under a clear plastic dome or top, oatmeal
cookies or bars under glass are easily seen and nutritious (if you make them
at home).  If you left a roll in wax paper or plastic wrap, would she go for
that?  Maybe dried apple slices?

I think it has something to do with the vision changes, but my MIL seems to
not see things behind glass unless someone calls her attention to it. And I
know they sometimes reach a stage where they don't know to unwrap food
before eating.

Thank you,for you've given me some good ideas here with the
rolls, oatmeal cookies and such. :-) And I can make them healthier at
home. Can sneak in a little more of the good stuff like B vitamens from
brewers yeast powder. :-) And not make them too sweet.

And when I go shopping I'll have to look for that clear plastic dome
deal that I can put such under. I leave that on the table with some good
stuff under it and I'm sure Mom would notice it! LoL

Ronny, you sound like me.  I once said I was the only person I knew who
gained weight when I was sick.  When I felt bad, I ate.  When depressed, I
ate.  When I felt good, I ate.  I would eat when I knew I wasn't hungry but
I wanted to put something that tasted good in my mouth; I didn't have
anything else to do to make me feel better.  When I had my hip replacement
in 2000, I lost some of my weight.  Since then I have gradually lost more
and now I can't eat nearly as much as I used to; I fill up too quickly.
Maybe that's because I'm getting older by the day!  I read late at night (12
or 1) and sometimes sleep until noon the next day.  That way I only eat two
real meals a day and I think that has helped to keep the weight from coming
back on.  And the dresses I buy now seem to be the correct size!!

Ronny:
Oh,I do especially know what you mean about eating when you're not
hungry;but you just want something good tasting in your mouth! :-)
That's how I am about chocolate! :-) Sometimes I just get a craving for
chocolate and I may even put it off two to four days if I'm going to
have to bake something;but sooner or later I will have my chocolate! LoL

What I used to do once a week was buy two Hershey bars for me and Mom
when grocery shopping once a week. That pretty well kept things under
control since after eating one candy bar,I knew I would be going back in
a few days and could get another. :-) Then once I decided to buy a whole
package of Hershey candy bars as my reasoning was they were cheaper that
way; :-) but then when such was in the house I would finish off the most
of them in two days! LoL So back to maybe buying just two a week. :-)

Ah and chocolate cake. :-) On average I make about 2 a month. Usually
when I get a real strong urge for something chocolate. :-) But then I've
learned to put the cake in the stove at night because one time I didn't
and by the next morning Mom had eaten nearly half a cake! LoL

And then there is my sometimes craving of fatty, salty or sour food! :-)
One of my favorites is green olives because they have both the sour and
the salty together!LoL

Ronny, don't you know that men's waists don't get larger, they just drop
lower.  :-)

I see some guys that look like they are wearing the same jeans they did 20
years ago by wearing their jeans at the bikini line instead of the waist
line.  It's kind like a bad comb-over, just gives you a strong urge to go
"tee-hee".

You could always get relaxed fit jeans like my hubby does.
He says they fit better.  I don't say a word.  :-)

Oh man,I see some older cowboy type guys around here with huge stomachs!
And yeah, they wear their jeans low! :-) But what gets me is these guys
wear those with a belt that has a huge metal cowboy buckel and I wonder
how they stand to have that metal gouging into their overhanging
stomach?! Whoa!

Ronny:
Best not to! LoL Oh I laugh;but I wear my jeans lower too now. :-) And
lately,in hot summertime,I've gone to wearing short, baggy cargo pants.
:-) Oh,they are so comfortable! LoL And sandals! Love those. Before this
I always wore jeans and tennis shoes all summer;but no more. Just can't
take the heat as well as I used to.

And I remember years ago when in school Mom would buy me new jeans at
the start of school when it was still hot here and when I got sweaty in
those, there would be a line of blue dye around my waist! LoL

Now I've got an idea for me for when the weather gets cooler. Overalls!
:-) I've just had one pair in my whole life and that a few years ago.
They are so comfortable!:-) And loose around the waist! LoL I used to
wouldn't wear them much because the only guys who did were older men.
:-) But now I'm 50yo,so I guess I can wear them if I please! LoL

Hi Ronny - I live in the Denver, CO metro area.  I see a LOT of young,
bouncy women going around in overalls.  So if they're comfy, fit the way you
like - I say go for it!  If the 20-somethings can do it, so can you!  And
you'll be right in style, or would be around these parts.
