So do we all Boydette, in one form or another. The trick is to accept
the fact, get what help is available and continue to function as well as
we can anyway. Fear is a part of living. If you don't fear, then you
probably don't understand the nature of things. Fear is normal and we
can muddle on through despite it. Discuss your fears with the Doc and
follow his lead. He's the one with the knowledge, incomplete though it
may be, and can help rest your mind and ease the road ahead. We are here
too, even if only in spirit and many of us have BTDT so stick around and
relax. Ask for help and we'll try to give it - as best we can, being not
perfect, after all.

Dear Boydette,

How do you know this for sure?   Maybe it isn't so.  There are drugs which
can induce a dementia like effect for one thing.    Even if it was so, there
are things to help right now.   Please write more and explain what is
happening.

Ok obviously explanation needed...P doc is my pyschiatrist (sp?) I have
a needed visit every 6 months for my bipolar disorder....I have been
experiencing some other symptoms so I discussed this with him...he
diagnosed me with Early Onset Dementia...while I was still trying to
understand how this could be...we discussed my parents situation and I
could not believe it since they are close to their 80s and been hard
drinking all of MY life....he told me being as I was bipolar had a
family history of dementia and my meds I was exhibiting signs of early
onset dementa....he upped my meds told me NOT TO EVER drink alcohol and
gave me a script for vitamin B-1 for memory loss...I have never even
thought this could happen to me at such a young age....anyway I cant
take care of my parents if I have the same problem...<weak Laugh>

Hi Boydette,

Like Mary said, dementia symptoms can be brought on chemically by various
meds.   I know that it took a whole battery of tests to prove that Ida
really was in early stage alzheimers, and not some other mistaken condition.
Even with all the tests there are other conditions that LOOK JUST LIKE
alzheimers and aren't.    One single test by your psychiatrist is just NOT
enough proof.

OK, now think about the possibility that it might really be (which you have
been already doing).   Yes, it is a terrible illness, but it is not a
painful one.   There are worse things one can be diagnosed with in this
lifetime.  If further testing confirmed it, there are things you would need
to do now, while you are still capable.  But you don't really know that you
have it, not from one single opinion.

My advice to you would be to GET TESTED for real.   Get a CAT scan and
thyroid test and whatever else would prove the diagnosis for real.   Don't
just take this one guy's word on it.   Another thing would be to research
very thoroughly all your medications and to see which of them has any memory
problems associated with it.

Meanwhile take your psych doc's advice, and take your vitamin B and all the
rest he said, until you know for sure what the truth is, but I wouldn't just
only go on one person's opinion who has done no other kinds of medical
testing to discover what could be causing it.   Heck, Boydette... memory
loss has been associated with taking Statin drugs for cholesterol, even!
That is a far cry from having alzheimers disease.

Meanwhile we are all praying for you here, and hoping for the best for you.

memory loss is also a well known symptom of depression,
especially in bipolar people.

i don't think this supposed psychiatrist knows a dementia from a
hole in the ground.  it sounds to me like time to find another
psydoc.  at the very least, you need a second opinion.

and b-1 is not going to do much.

Don't freak out just yet - there is a form of pseudo dementia
associated with the medications used for treating bipolar illness -
apparently caused by folate and B12 deficiency. All you know right now
is you have some sort of cognitive impairment, and you have NO idea
just yet what its from, if its reversable and treatable, etc. etc.

I had symptoms like that from thyroid problems, and my family doc just
wasn't up on thyroid enough to catch it, even though she'd ordered some
tests. Took a specialist to sort it out, and the fog lifted with
appropriate treatment.

Could be as simple as some vitamin supplements. Cross the bridge when
you come to it, don't jump off the side of the gorge just yet.

Yes that is it I have a thyroid definicy because I dont have a gland...I
take meds for that and also for bipolar....I think you are right it is a
combination of several things...whatever the reason doc told me the
memory loss etc is NOT gonna return now even with the vitamins etc...so
basically what I am gettting is they medicated me into dementia....God
this crap never ends....I am scared out of my wits

Boydette, I pray it is not as bad as you think or as the doctor said.

Boydette,

You need a REAL workup by someone who specializes in this. It could be the
thyroid, it could be the depression, it could be a B-12 deficiency. (Don't
know anything about B-1 and what it might have to do with it.)

His advice is not bad (heaven knows with the meds you're on and family
history, you should not be drinking) but you need to know more.

Get a referral for a second opinion from your primary care physician, a
recommendation from the Alz Association for a doc who knows this stuff. As
tempting as it is to get frozen and terrified in place, you've got to move
quickly in case it is something reversible (so it can be reversed),
treatable (so the damage can be contained) or a misdiagnosis (so you can go
back to breathing.)

We're all here to help you walk through it, but none of us can do it for
you. (That's a bitch, huh?) Make some calls and let us know what you find
out.
