Maurice & Brenda Terry - 25 Jun 2005 12:52 GMT
My husband was diagnosed with AD 3 years ago.  He has become paranoid
and combative over time.  He  has started to wander.  The psychiatrist
just started him on Depakote 500mg twice daily.  I thought this was a
med for epilepsy.  Has anyone heard of this being used for AD?  Thanks,
Brenda

Brenda,
Yes, it helped with my wife's agitation at one phase of her AD.

Remember, most drugs have more than one use.
For instance, aspirin not only eases headaches, it also reduces
inflammation and reduces blood clots - and rogaine accidentally
grows hair.

By the way, the drugs that affect mental state often need to be taken
for a few weeks before their effect becomes clear;  the best dose is
also not found until it has built up to the working level in the body.

Everyone responds to each drug differently - if Depakote isn't
effective enough, there are other drugs that can be tried.

As per Glenfiddich, my wife was placed on Depakote for a while for
disorientation and resultant resistance to re-direction efforts. She
has progressed (regressed?) beyond this point now, however.

Brenda, if you go to google and search using the words Depakote and
Alzheimer's you will find lots of references to the use of the drug
being used to manage agitation.

It's often used to control agitation and for bipolar folks, it
can help control mania.
