Mother's Day

Songbird - 08 May 2005 02:46 GMT First off, happy Mother's Day to all of you out there!
Today the vet and I agreed to put my 9yo shiba inu (a Japanese dog) to sleep. Sandy and Kahlua, a 9yo chocolate lab, are like my kids, never having had any of the 2-legged variety. Sandy had a hypothyroid problem, which may or may not have caused the liver failure she was experiencing. The next step would have been a liver biopsy, and none of the prospective diagnoses were good ones, so we agreed to release her from the extreme pain and nausea she was suffering. I'm handling it pretty well -- it's been several days in working through the bloodwork trail. The vet kept saying this was nothing serious but my "maternal instinct" was telling me differently, and today's bloodwork showed I was right.
I'm a little concerned about how I will be tomorrow when we take my mom out for lunch for Mother's Day, given that I am mourning Sandy and have a massive cold. My dad called yesterday to invite hubby and I to join them, and my first thought was that I was way too busy -- we were still dealing with Sandy's treatment and I am moving in less than two weeks. Then I realized it was Mother's Day, not just any Sunday, and knew we have to go because next year who knows what state she will be in. So I am feeling a little mixed about it -- wanting to celebrate her as my mom, but also grieving that she is no longer the mom I once knew and will only become less so with time.
I suspect I am not alone -- some of you may have similar emotions tomorrow, and I wanted you to know I will be thinking of you.

Lesanne - 08 May 2005 03:01 GMT So sorry to hear about your dog. My dogs are a big comfort to me, and Mom still remembers the name of her poodle (the only name she remembers) and loves him dearly. My Ma will not know it is Mother's day, but my daughter lives close and her daughter. We talked about it, and don't know what to do tomorrow. Going out with Mom like she is would be hard, because although we still do sometimes, you never know what she might do, and in the probably crowded conditions we most likely would not have fun. We kind of left it up in the air. Tonight she was frustrated with her clothing, had taken off some of it and was chewing on a fastener on her bra that she had taken off. She was saying something like "I cannot make this work" so I reached in her direction to take the bra and she smacked me one hard. Of course it did not really hurt, but for some reason it really made me feel bad. Strange.

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your fur-baby. I had to put my wonderful German Shepherd male to sleep last October due to bone cancer, so I do relate. We get to love them so much, these animals. They are truly selfless in their love.
Hope you are feeling better and that you do have a nice mother's day.
I will have an uncharacteristically quiet mothers day tomorrow. None of my kids are able to come to visit, (the two local ones are out of town at a wedding) but all phoned already, sent cards and gifts and we have a rain check for a nice dinner with my youngest son and his fiancee when they get back next week.
I will be thinking of my mother who passed away in early 2000, and of Ida, now gone three weeks. Somehow I am glad it will be a quiet day. It feels right.

I know how you feel because about 10 years ago we had to put our terrier mix dog, Sugar, to sleep due to cancer; that was such a loss because at that time, we didn't have any other pets in the house to comfort us.
> First off, happy Mother's Day to all of you out there! > [quoted text clipped - 24 lines] > > Songbird Ronny TX - 12 May 2005 03:05 GMT Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog.:-( And also hope you are feeling better what with your cold and all. To me, that would just make things worse when you're already not feeling good from other things.
I saved Mon's Mothers Day Cards we got in the mail until Sunday morning when I gave her mine too. She really enjoyed looking at and reading them; :-) but I'm not sure how long she kept it in her mind that it was Mother's Day?
My oldest Sister came by Sunday night and brought us supper. So we pigged out on fried catfish, two types of hushpuppies, french fries and coleslaw! LoL Man it was good! And my sister was telling me that she's been catching some pretty big catfish out of her farm pond,so got me into the idea that I need to go fishing pretty soon. :-)
Gwen Love - 12 May 2005 03:52 GMT Ronny, you made me hungry. I really love whole fried catfish and hush puppies. I could really just eat that with nothing else except a glass of sweet tea. Delicious! Gwen

Ronny: That is a good meal! :-) And heh,one of the first things I do every morning is make myself a glass of sweetened iced tea! LoL Drink that stuff all day long and am drinking some now. :-) And then wonder why I sometimes have to get up in the middle of the night and hurry to the bathroom?! :-) LoL
Ah,have thought about going fishing lately at my sisters pond and that is nice;but for right now I have other things I rather be doing than that. Looked at the sale paper we go today though and saw a good price on catfish at one of our stores! :-)

Ronny: I started to tell you that I didn't know except one type hushpuppy was round and one was shaped like a marshmellow; but then it hit me that the ones shaped like a marshmellow were tater tots and not hushpuppies at all! LoL
Onething too,I figure a lot of people would think of as strange the way I cook catfish at times. I do like it breaded and fried;but then one day I got home from grocery shopping and was really hungry,so I just put small pieces of catfish on a plate and cooked that on high in the microwave for a few minutes. (ha) Then served it with tarter sauce. I love it that way too;but I think my oldest Sis thinks I'm crazy to ever cook catfish that way! LoL

Hi Ronny,
I have tried cooking it a few ways. Mostly these two; One is the classic breaded and fried, another is to sprinkle the filets liberally with "Seafood Magic" (made by Paul Prudhomme) and fry it in a hot pan till it is sort of crispy. It's good that way.

Karen - 13 May 2005 04:47 GMT Is there a bad way to fix catfish? Must be possible, but I think I've liked every way I've ever tasted. :-)

Ronny: You and Evelyn are both making me hungry for catfish this morning! LoL Will have to try your way with picante sauce and her way with Seafood Magic seasoning! :-)

Very nice, and it works all the ways that work with catfish.

Ronny: Yep,very hard to get me to eat that vile catfish! :-) So I just bought 15lbs of catfish nuggets while in town today! LoL
Read something interesting awhile back about Texas producing so much farm raised catfish;but the article said we needed to raise a lot more because we ate a lot more than was raised in the state!
Ah and now I'm also thinking about bullfrog legs! Would be nice to have some of those all fried up too! LoL

My dad told me of how hard it was when he was growing up during the depression. He is 93 years old now, so it was a long time ago. He was often hungry :-(
Anyway he went to a friends house and the woman served up something delicious and told him it was frog legs. He went to the hardware store and bought a trident, and when he could, he would catch frogs and he was very grateful for the meal. He insists they are really tasty.

Karen - 14 May 2005 13:47 GMT Like everything else unusual -- they taste like chicken. :-) I swear one of these days I want to open a restaurant and serve mystery meat and call the restaurant "Tastes Like Chicken". I've had frog legs and they were good, but way more work than buying chicken at the store.

Gwen Love - 14 May 2005 18:58 GMT The men of our church are having a fish fry this weekend at which they are serving fried catfish, chicken fingers, and frog legs, along with all the side items. Karen - 14 May 2005 13:51 GMT Ronny, if you're willing to raise chickens, I'm surprised you don't try catfish. I've heard they are very easy to raise. OTOH, probably not as low maintenance as chickens and they wouldn't eat the bugs out of your garden for you. :-)
BTW, they are also good pan grilled in olive oil with fresh tomatoes, onions and peppers (sweet or hot according to your taste).

Interesting- read articles where some people raise them in 50 gallon barrels. And some raise chickens, other birds or rabbits, have redworm bins under the bird pens and then feed the worms to the fish. I like that idea. :-)
Karen - 13 May 2005 04:45 GMT Try it grilled with picante sauce on it some time (at whatever heat you prefer). I accidentally discovered a healthy way to enjoy it and it's remained one of my favorites.
