We had all sorts of thunder, lightening, rain and wind in my part of NE
Texas last night. The worst was somewhere around midnight. Lightening
hitting so close 2 or 3 times that I could well hear it even though I
didn't have my hearing aid on! :-( Now that's loud! LoL The lights went
off and on a few times;but as far as I know they never went off for any
extended period of time? Don't know for sure though as I went on to
sleep.

Went outside this morning and saw no major damage anywhere. Just some
small to medium size limbs down in the yard. Noticed the wind did break
one of the shoots off a tomato plant. :-( But that's not so bad as I can
root that and get another plant out of it! :-)

Checked my birds this morning and they were OK. Went out and leaned my
hand up against one pen and a blamed red wasp stung me on my left thumb!
:-( LoL So far it's not hurting too bad and after he stung me I hit that
wasp with my fist for some reason, :-) so he's not hurting either :-)
and he'll never be stinging me or anyone else again! LoL

Got Mom fed,her beddings changed and the clothes in the washer this
morning and decided I better get offline a bit and hang those out and do
a few other things around here. :-)

My cousin was supposed to come somewhere between 12 and 1pm to look
after Mom. So this morning I thought I would take that time to try and
find a guinea nest? I know those guineas are laying somewhere;but there
are so many places to check for nests what with the trees, brush and all
in our fence rows and yard!

Kept about 10 of those birds up in their pens until 5:30pm day before
yesterday and got 5 or 6 eggs!:-) Kept a few less up yesterday and got 3
eggs. I think I have 12 of them in their pens today and mean to keep
them there until 5:30 or so this evening and see how many eggs I get
today? Have 14teen eggs so far in the house and one I saw this morning
in one pen. Want to get a few more before I put them all in one of my
incubators. Hate to keep those birds up so long now each day before I
let them out to eat grass and bugs;but it is just easier this way as to
finding the eggs!(ha) And I dearly want more of them to incubate,so I
can have more guineas! LoL

I did get the load of clothes hung out this morning. Didn't know if it
would do any good as it was so cloudy and thought it might rain some
more;but the clouds went off and we've had two or more hours of
beautiful sunshine now. :-)

Cousin didn't show up,so don't know what's going on with that? Sometimes
she's sick or has a doctor's appointment; but then her Mom always comes
by and leaves a note on the door if that's what's up. Keep checking at
the door;but no note yet.

Went out back and saw I now have two eggs in one guinea pen. :-) Walked
over most of the yard and can't find a nest anywhere. Have two bunches
of trees with more little trees and undergrowth under those and did my
best to look through that;but haven't spotted a nest in those places.
Still have 2 fence rows, about 200 yards in length,to check out later
and our old hay barn too. So many places those blamed guineas could be
laying eggs when they are out! :-( LoL

Better go for now and get some other stuff done or just take a nap! :-)
Tried getting one a couple of hours ago and kept getting woke up.
Karen - 12 Apr 2005 04:01 GMT
Ronny,  just out of curiosity, do you let the guineas run around the
tomatoes so they can eat the bugs?  I remember my Grandma lamenting when she
couldn't keep chickens in her garden anymore because she said she never had
a problem with bugs then.

Ronny:
Karen, this one gets complicated because I can't personally vouch for
guineas not hurting/eating on any plants like tomatoes.

I raised some guineas-had around 3 dozen;but that was a long time ago. I
know we had those for at least 2 or so years before varmints and their
getting in the road and run over killed the guineas all out. Just don't
remember if we had a garden or not when we had those guineas?

And I just got these present guineas as eggs to incubate and a few young
ones last May. And I didn't let them out of their outdoor pens until
late fall. But what they did then was eat up a lot of grasshoppers we
had around here, :-) grasshoppers that were eating on flowers and nearly
every thing else. :-(

What I know for certain is that 2 to 3 dozen guineas will wipe out a
huge infestation of grasshoppers and that on several acres of land!
Thats what our 2 to 3 dozen did a number of years ago. That's why I
decided to get another start last year. I wanted to start back to doing
some vegetable gardening. And it made me sick to see grasshoppers eating
the flowers in the yard.

So what I've read and heard about guineas and gardens is that guineas
won't bother garden plants like tomatoes, etc. They won't scratch up a
garden like a chickens will. Guineas do eat grass & grass seeds and a
lot of insects.

I had a small 4x4 foot bed of onion bulbs I planted last winter and
covered those with leaves. I never saw any guineas get in that bed and
bother anything;but the chickens I got,got in that bed, scratched around
in it and just made a mess! :-( And that despite the fact that the fool
chickens had leaves all over our yard to get in to do that! :-) LoL

So I've read guineas won't bother tomatoes;but I also read one place
that they will if you feed them old tomatoes. So somebody said never
feed them whole tomatoes or such like that that you grow of intend to
grow in your garden. Cause if you do,then the guineas will eat them off
your garden plants.

I've read one book on guineas where a woman said they ate all sorts of
bugs off of her flowers;but never bothered the flowering plants or
scratched up the flower beds like chickens will.

I'll get back to you in this thread with a webpage link or two to some
guinea posting boards and you can find out more about guineas, vegetable
gardens & how the two do or don't get along on those. The people who
post on those boards have raised guineas for a lot longer than I have,so
know more firsthand about such than I do.

Ronny,  don't go to any trouble for me.  I live in the 'burbs and my
neighbors would kill me if I tried to keep chickens here.  It was your post
about guineas and tomatoes that brought back a vivid memory of my Grandma
and for that, I thank you.  Hadn't thought of that part of her in years, but
she always had a garden, just couldn't have chickens after she moved in with
my uncle.  I do know she swore by chickens to keep the bugs away.  It's a
shame to realize that many of the kids in my neighborhood have never had a
fresh tomato.

I grew up in New Jersey, and I want to tell you that they grow some
wonderful tomatoes there.  Every summer we ate them till they came out of
our ears!    My father always had a garden, and the flavor of those
homegrown Jersey tomatoes was out of this world!

Most of my childhood was spent where chickens came from the butcher or the
grocery store, but when I was very young my dad kept chickens and turkeys
and ducks.   No chicken ever tasted as good as those my dad killed fresh.
We then moved closer to his job and you couldn't have chickens in that area.

Now I live where there are still a lot of farms and fresh produce is so
cheap, we nearly live on it.  There is always such an abundance every year.
I can hardly wait for the fresh zucchini and fresh farm grown veggies, but I
still get my chicken from the grocery store :-)

My next door neighbor (a widow like me) has a new pet in her back year--a
rooster!
I am so glad  my bedroom is on the opposite end of the house and I have a
new privacy fence in my yard between our houses.  I can still hear that
rooster crowing all day though.  We are in the city limits so she may not be
supposed to have it, but doesn't really bother me so I don't worry about it.
We don't see each other too much, but we are always friendly and I see no
need to change that.

In university I lived in the middle of Toronto in a vaguely decrepit
apartment and I can still remember waking up to the crowing of...you
guessed it...roosters. I have no idea who had them right smack at St.
George and Bloor, or where they were keeping them, but someone had
roosters in the neighbourhood.

Or how about the Italian guy who lived next door to me in the other
half of an old semi in another Toronto core neighbourhood who kept
about 80 rabbits in his garage, which he raised for food (and yes, it
stunk). Strictly illegal, and although he insisted they were pets, they
kept showing up on the spit on the barbeque he made out of half an oil
drum (the smoke from which billowed in my kitchen window, aiiieee!).

Ah, livestock. The joys of urban life.

We had a neighbor keep a pot bellied pig in her back yard for awhile as a
pet until one of the other neighbors told the city authorities.  I figured
if it didn't stink, I wasn't going to say anything (and it didn't).
Funniest thing was watching the pig and my dog (Golden Lab mix) run to the
fence to sniff noses every time the dog went in the back yard.  They'd both
wag their tails.  Not a typical sight in the 'burbs.  :-)

Mary, I would have liked to have shared those rabbits with him!  Would take
mine fried though.

Ronny:
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Have been busy;but also
stupidly trying to keep up with a flame type war deal in one ng I've
posted in for a long time. I just got so tired of one poster trying to
boss me around and tell me how I had to post or else I should keep my
mouth shut.

Just thinking the guinea board I sometimes post on is probably made up
more of people that live in rural areas. :-) But you never know
sometimes
about the law on raising poultry in your area. Was shocked to read
recently that in New York City there's a law that said people could keep
up to 30 chickens! :-)

Ronny:
You're welcome :-) and I am glad my post brought back some good memories
for you! :-) And you know, that's one thing I like about posting on some
groups,I just never know when someone is going to say something that
brings up a good memory for me too! :-) LoL

> Karen:
> I do
> know she swore by chickens to keep the

Ronny:
Oh your Grandma was right! Chickens are great about eating bugs too! :-)
I think guineas are better for that in someways;
but at least I never had to worry about chickens running off and last
year nearly all of my guineas headed up the road and half of them never
came back home! :-(

> Karen:
> It's a shame to realize that

Ronny:
Now that is a shame! :-( To think they would grow up thinking that
tomatoes taste only like the kind that come out of a big chain grocery
store! (ha)

Which reminds me,I need to get a few cherry tomato plants to. :-) I just
don't need to get carried away and buy more than a couple of plants of
that kind! Sometimes I have been known to get carried away and end up
with a lot more tomato plants than I need or can take care off! LoL

Just thinking here, since you live in the suburbs,we could get you to
raising quail since it might not be the best idea for you to have a few
chickens or guineas! :-)LoL
Just laughing because I know how I can get carried away at times talking
about my quail! LoL Have that one small incubator of mine full of quail
eggs now and they should start hatching about the 20th or 21st. Then
I've got to get offline pretty soon because I have to go to town
shopping today and part of that is checking at a couple of stores to see
it they have the one or two parts I need on my 2nd little incubator? Got
lots of quail eggs and guinea eggs that need to be set in that pretty
soon! Gotta get a move on!LoL

And in a way it's kind of crazy that the other day I put 18 eggs under
that setting hen out back who's in the old doghouse. I don't think it's
like we're going to need the eggs from some of those chickens later on.
I say that because the grown quail I have now are laying plenty of eggs!
Enough for eating and incubating more. Ah well, things will work out one
way or the other! LoL

BTW,it takes about 4 quail eggs to equal one hen egg. Some people
wouldn't like the idea of taking more time to crack more eggs like that
for a recipe or cooked eggs; but it's no big deal to me. Doesn't take
that much longer and they taste just as good as chicken eggs.

Just want to add here that I have read the rest of the posts in this
thread and it sure has been nice reading what others have said as well.
:-)

The mention of guineas brought back a memory for me.  We had one guinea hen
when I was a very little girl that I claimed as mine.  One day the school
bus ran over it in the road and I just cried and cried.  I thought my worlld
had come to an end.  I don't remember a thing about the guinea hen until she
got run over, but I'll never forget that!
