Ronny, don't go to any trouble for me. I live in the 'burbs and my
neighbors would kill me if I tried to keep chickens here. It was your post
about guineas and tomatoes that brought back a vivid memory of my Grandma
and for that, I thank you. Hadn't thought of that part of her in years, but
she always had a garden, just couldn't have chickens after she moved in with
my uncle. I do know she swore by chickens to keep the bugs away. It's a
shame to realize that many of the kids in my neighborhood have never had a
fresh tomato.

I grew up in New Jersey, and I want to tell you that they grow some
wonderful tomatoes there. Every summer we ate them till they came out of
our ears! My father always had a garden, and the flavor of those
homegrown Jersey tomatoes was out of this world!
Most of my childhood was spent where chickens came from the butcher or the
grocery store, but when I was very young my dad kept chickens and turkeys
and ducks. No chicken ever tasted as good as those my dad killed fresh.
We then moved closer to his job and you couldn't have chickens in that area.
Now I live where there are still a lot of farms and fresh produce is so
cheap, we nearly live on it. There is always such an abundance every year.
I can hardly wait for the fresh zucchini and fresh farm grown veggies, but I
still get my chicken from the grocery store :-)

My next door neighbor (a widow like me) has a new pet in her back year--a
rooster!
I am so glad my bedroom is on the opposite end of the house and I have a
new privacy fence in my yard between our houses. I can still hear that
rooster crowing all day though. We are in the city limits so she may not be
supposed to have it, but doesn't really bother me so I don't worry about it.
We don't see each other too much, but we are always friendly and I see no
need to change that.

In university I lived in the middle of Toronto in a vaguely decrepit
apartment and I can still remember waking up to the crowing of...you
guessed it...roosters. I have no idea who had them right smack at St.
George and Bloor, or where they were keeping them, but someone had
roosters in the neighbourhood.
Or how about the Italian guy who lived next door to me in the other
half of an old semi in another Toronto core neighbourhood who kept
about 80 rabbits in his garage, which he raised for food (and yes, it
stunk). Strictly illegal, and although he insisted they were pets, they
kept showing up on the spit on the barbeque he made out of half an oil
drum (the smoke from which billowed in my kitchen window, aiiieee!).
Ah, livestock. The joys of urban life.

We had a neighbor keep a pot bellied pig in her back yard for awhile as a
pet until one of the other neighbors told the city authorities. I figured
if it didn't stink, I wasn't going to say anything (and it didn't).
Funniest thing was watching the pig and my dog (Golden Lab mix) run to the
fence to sniff noses every time the dog went in the back yard. They'd both
wag their tails. Not a typical sight in the 'burbs. :-)

Mary, I would have liked to have shared those rabbits with him! Would take
mine fried though.

Ronny:
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Have been busy;but also
stupidly trying to keep up with a flame type war deal in one ng I've
posted in for a long time. I just got so tired of one poster trying to
boss me around and tell me how I had to post or else I should keep my
mouth shut.
Just thinking the guinea board I sometimes post on is probably made up
more of people that live in rural areas. :-) But you never know
sometimes
about the law on raising poultry in your area. Was shocked to read
recently that in New York City there's a law that said people could keep
up to 30 chickens! :-)

Ronny:
You're welcome :-) and I am glad my post brought back some good memories
for you! :-) And you know, that's one thing I like about posting on some
groups,I just never know when someone is going to say something that
brings up a good memory for me too! :-) LoL
> Karen:

Ronny:
Oh your Grandma was right! Chickens are great about eating bugs too! :-)
I think guineas are better for that in someways;
but at least I never had to worry about chickens running off and last
year nearly all of my guineas headed up the road and half of them never
came back home! :-(

Ronny:
Now that is a shame! :-( To think they would grow up thinking that
tomatoes taste only like the kind that come out of a big chain grocery
store! (ha)
Which reminds me,I need to get a few cherry tomato plants to. :-) I just
don't need to get carried away and buy more than a couple of plants of
that kind! Sometimes I have been known to get carried away and end up
with a lot more tomato plants than I need or can take care off! LoL
Just thinking here, since you live in the suburbs,we could get you to
raising quail since it might not be the best idea for you to have a few
chickens or guineas! :-)LoL
Just laughing because I know how I can get carried away at times talking
about my quail! LoL Have that one small incubator of mine full of quail
eggs now and they should start hatching about the 20th or 21st. Then
I've got to get offline pretty soon because I have to go to town
shopping today and part of that is checking at a couple of stores to see
it they have the one or two parts I need on my 2nd little incubator? Got
lots of quail eggs and guinea eggs that need to be set in that pretty
soon! Gotta get a move on!LoL
And in a way it's kind of crazy that the other day I put 18 eggs under
that setting hen out back who's in the old doghouse. I don't think it's
like we're going to need the eggs from some of those chickens later on.
I say that because the grown quail I have now are laying plenty of eggs!
Enough for eating and incubating more. Ah well, things will work out one
way or the other! LoL
BTW,it takes about 4 quail eggs to equal one hen egg. Some people
wouldn't like the idea of taking more time to crack more eggs like that
for a recipe or cooked eggs; but it's no big deal to me. Doesn't take
that much longer and they taste just as good as chicken eggs.
Just want to add here that I have read the rest of the posts in this
thread and it sure has been nice reading what others have said as well.
:-)

The mention of guineas brought back a memory for me. We had one guinea hen
when I was a very little girl that I claimed as mine. One day the school
bus ran over it in the road and I just cried and cried. I thought my worlld
had come to an end. I don't remember a thing about the guinea hen until she
got run over, but I'll never forget that!
