PLEASE Evelyn!  If you are going to post an off topic message, then
will you at least have the decency to put OFF TOPIC in the subjectline??
Gwen Love - 07 Apr 2005 21:04 GMT
Evelyn, that's really cute!

Is this a serious post?  Alas, I see no smileys.
No, it must be a joke, no rational person would be so petty.

Evelyn .. that was delightful.  Thank you.  :-))
And while I'm here may I say thank you  too for all the words of wisdom you
post in this ng which I, and I dare say many others like me, find so very
useful and comforting.

No doubt it was a serious post.

>Is this a serious post?  Alas, I see no smileys.
No smiley necessary. The whole of usenet is built on the firm soil of
netiquette. Warning other readers that a post is unrelated to the subject in
question is only good etiquette.

I have once before tried to introduct newsgroup etiquette and had the most
atrociaous attacks directed at me. It seems that some long term posters here
believe it to be their own fiefdom.

I wonder how many have chosen to not post here because of the ruling cabal?

Dear Anthony,

There is no ruling cabal, but those which people choose to create in their
own minds.

Usenet is free and unmoderated.  Anyone can post anything they want, unless
it is something against the law.    Anyone who posts here does so with the
full understanding that they expose their words to public opinion which may
include acceptance, intolerance, anger, disagreement, whatever.

Thanks Kayar.   The only reason I post here is in hopes that I can help
someone in some small way, in return for the way the kind people in this
newsgroup helped me for the last 5 years.   It is a tough journey, and a
time when often all sorts of emotions arise.

If the troll didn't figure out for itself that a "screen cleaner" clearly
marked in the subject line had nothing at all to do with alzheimers and
actually needed an off topic label, then it must be a pretty stupid troll to
begin with :-)

I'm confused. Who exactly IS the Troll you refer to, Evelyn?!

If you look above at the entire conversation you would see it is
the person who posted the original gripe, as copied and pasted below.

Evelyn is not being a troll or somebody would have plonked her by now.
I think she only meant to post something off topic that was funny to
look at...the problem is that you must put OT in the subject line!!!

I probably should have.

Since screen cleaners have nothing to do with alzheimers disease, I assumed
most people would be smart enough to know it was off topic.

You'd think so, wouldn't you?

Yep, I would.... but then some people insist on the letter of the law rather
than the spirit of it.

Ronny:
Hmmm,it seems according to this J poster, that I should put OT in the
subject line anytime I post about my guineas,
quail,chickens,tomatoes,etc, etc,etc,
etc, etc! :-) LoL Yes,I can see how that is so very important to remember
:-) and no doubt I will surely forget all about it the next time I post
about my guineas, chickens,quail,tomatoes,etc,etc,etc,etc,
etc! :-) LoL

Hey,I can blame it all on my being a lowly WebTV user! :-) Cause
everybody knows we don't know no better! LoL

I think that the purpose of this newsgroup is to be supportive of those
connected in some way with the stress of dealing with alzheimer's disease,
whether as a caregiver, or a relative, or whatever.

For the most part things that are off topic ought to be marked as such, but
when you are speaking about supportiveness, humor or such..... is it REALLY
off topic?   I don't think so, since humor is about the only thing that got
me through the years I had my mother in law living here.

I enjoy reading Ronny's stuff about rural life in Texas, and I enjoy reading
humorous stories and I enjoy reading various bits of life being shared here.
That's me.   If others insist on having "OT" always clearly marked, I try
and do it, but once in a while I don't remember to.

The kind friends who sent me so many cute and funny cartoons, jokes,
humorous links, were indeed being supportive in my book.

When you are depressed, frazzled, dealing with an illness that has no
reasonable answers, no cure, and when it is someone you care about suffering
from it, hey, humor is about the only lifeline/ray of sunshine that crosses
over all of that!    So I for one, am all for having humor posted
occasionally, and I will try to remember to mark it "OT" when I do it
myself.

I love reading humorous things on the newsgroups I subscribe to.  Puts fun
and joy in a day that might otherwise be painful and joyless.

If Miss Manners thinks it's worse etiquette to publicly correct someone than
to gracefully overlook a minor issue, who am I to disagree?  :-)

I figure anyone that has reason to be here in this NG has enough of a
truckload of stuff to deal with without getting harassed about what is
essentially grammatical errors to an old Usenet environment that has
expanded so dramatically as to be unrecognizable.  When I had a 1200 BPS
modem, I worried a lot more about download speed.  And I'm not on high speed
now, just a 56k.

Best as I can tell, some people are just overcome with the need to feel
"RIGHT" sometimes and they have to make everyone know it.  Sad, really when
you think about it.

Right! :-)

Ronny:
My idea is that humor and such things as what we are doing or hope to do
in our everyday life is never off topic and that because such things as
that are a help to both ourself and to others. All of that is
supportiveness of ourself and others. And we need to never forget that
Alzheimers & caring for a loved one with that is not our whole life.
It's a big part of it;but not all of it. I know some have it harder than
others depending on the stage a loved ones Alzheimers is in;but my idea
is that even at it's worst a person/caregiver needs other
interests, other things they are doing and enjoy,no matter how small they
might seem to some and we need to talk with others about that part of
our lives as well. To me,those things are a big help and stress breaker.

I will/might :-) try to remember to do that too;but you know us WebTV
users have been said in someplaces to not be overly bright, :-) so
sometimes I may forget! LoL

Amen! :-)

Ronny:
And a double Amen to what you said here!:-) Man,I don't know how many
times I have had it up to here with somethings and just coming online
and reading something funny somebody said made me laugh and helped me a
lot. Or just talking about everyday things and reading about others
everyday things helped me a lot. Or seeing a picture of someone's garden
or yard or where they've been on vacation and hearing about that. All of
that helps me. And I like to know about where people live and what it's
like there? The only thing I never ask is for info that could tell me or
lead others to exactly where the other person lives. That's one thing I
would never ask for from anyone.
