Anybody know how to get urine out of my favorite recliner? Or better yet, some way to keep the depends on? I know, I know, all the things that "don't work". This is so not fun. I am pinning some waterproof covers over the chairs now that the horse is already out of the barn.

Hi Lesanne,

Get yourself one of those small wet vacs like the bissell little green clean machine or something like it (there are several brands out there.... try Target or Sears or any store with a good selection).

There are products you can buy that work on an enzymatic level that will neutralize the urine odor.   You can find them in the pet supply, for instance.

Dampen the fabric well with the urine neutralizer, then shampoo it with the small wet vac.

That has worked well for us with doggie accidents as well.

As you have discovered, the best remedy is prevention, whenever it is possible.

ooo ooo a wet vac, what a great idea. And I thought replacing all the carpet with tile would be all I needed to do :).

Hey I Have three dogs, two cats, a few hangers on feral cats around outside, a jillion
guppies... Nobody ever did anything worse than throwing up on the furniture.
That would be the poodle. His revenge move.

You might try the following:
http://www.cleanreport.com/catlist.cfm?subid=51

It worked for me when my kids were always on the upholstered furniture when
they had to throw up.  Got the smell out completely, and didn't leave any
other smell behind.  It was like it never happened.

Hi Lesanne,

When my mother started dressing and undressing constantly(every few
minutes) and then started using whatever was handy as a potty the only
thing that worked was putting her in one-piece jumpers(fortunately she
and been a nurse and had 5 in her wardrobe). She could not figure out
how to get them off, so the depends stayed on and I no longer had to
clean up urine and excrement from sheets, walls, floors, her hair etc.
Try looking online and in thrift stores for jumpers or find a pattern
and have them made.

Hope this helps and good luck,

It has been mentioned here in the past that they sell jumpsuits that fasten
in the back just for this kind of problem.   I believe it was mentioned that
Silverts had them, but I could be wrong.   They are used in nursing homes or
for patients cared for at home who have this sort of problem.

Aw, thanks you guys, but I just can't do that right now. She has such a good
time taking her clothing off, and she still makes the bathroom more than
half the time. Right now I am going with washable covers all over everything
:).

lesanne, if you keep closing the barn door *after* the horse is
gone, you'll never have a horse!

it really does pay to prepare in advance for the inevitable, and
if you're going to keep her at home, you should get some clothing
like this now.  otherwise you will want it yesterday when you
need it.

a geriatric psychiatrist told me that incontinence was far and
away the most cited reason for placing a LO in a care facility.

I hear you Lesanne. :-) You hate to stop your Mom from doing something
she still can do and enjoys doing! LoL Know what you mean! :-)

For awhile my Mom was coming into my bedroom to pee on the floor or
other places like that! Or she would sometimes go to have a bowel
movement where her potty chair used to be! I'm just glad that part
stopped! LoL Ah and then there are the times she refuses to use her
potty chair because she says it's full;but she may have only used it
once before a few minutes ago! And I simply don't empty her potty chair
every time she uses it,as she sometimes has to go several times in say a
15 minute period! So I wait awhile and sometimes she says she can't use
it as it's now too full, when it is far from that!LoL

We bought of box of those blue small sheets, the ones with plastic on one
side and an absorbent material on the other.   They were very helpful.   We
usually kept one on the sofa where my mother in law liked to sit, just in
case of any leakage.   We also put one in the bed just beneath where she
would lay.   Occasionally she would manage to scoot it out of the way, but
for the most part they saved a few times of having to wash everything up.

Those type pads are really nice! :-) Sometimes I will put one over Mom's
bed pad & under the sheet & then one or two over the sheet. Sometimes
that does cut down on the number of sheets I have to wash! :-) Most time
Mom leaves hers in place;but they can end up over or under her pillow!
And at times I have woke up in my recliner to find myself covered with
one or two of those pads and or whatever else Mom found handy to cover
me up with! LoL

I was just thinking about your post here :-) and the one before it.
Sometimes I get up from sleeping and Mom's bottom sheet is gone and
sometimes I literally can't find it! And at times she puts her purse and
all kinds of things in her bed and under her pillow!

What gets me though is when my glasses or the TV remote control have
gone missing and I'm just certain Mom has put them somewhere;but where?!
And at least half of the time it turns out I'm the one who put them
somewhere but the usual places and I just forgot! :-) LoL

Ronny:
I was saved/born again by grace through faith in Jesus Christ when I was
16 years old. By repentance toward God and faith in Jesus Christ. At
that time God came into my life and let me see God and let me see myself
and my need of God. That was the goodness of God that led me to
repentance. :-) Then God explained to me about Jesus Christ and him
being on the cross for me,there in my place, there taking my sins upon
himself. And God's love was pouring out upon me as God was showing me
all of this and explaining it to me. I believed God. I put my faith in
what God told me because that was backed up by both God's direct word to
me and God's love pouring out upon me. I put my belief in God and my
faith in Jesus Christ and in what he had done for me on the cross.

Sorry so late but using poise pads in my moms depends helps a great
deal.
Lesanne - 16 Mar 2005 15:51 GMT
Mom really loves taking OFF anything that has any plastic, etc. that is on
any furniture. I have to hide the chucks on her bed underneath the sheets
and even then on occasion she will quietly get up at night, strip the bed,
strip herself and get back in bed in a pile of miscellany.
