I have been reading your posts and the part one of you wrote about a
swallowing assessment and problems with choking....well my husband has
had this problem for some time now. He also sneezes a lot before he
starts choking on food or drink. Is this a part of alzheimers? How do u
mean u thicken the fluids?
I want you all to know that I did find someone willing to make the trip
with us and so I won't be taking him alone. Thanks so much for all of
your advice. It helped more than u can know.
As for driving. I had watched him having more and more problems with
driving his truck and suggested several times we sell it as we only
needed one vehicle. He flatly refused, loving his truck and of course no
one wants to have to stop driving.
As things progressed I knew i had to do something with or without his
consent because it was becoming a real danger to himself and others. So
using power of attorney I sold the truck and told him i had shipped it
ahead and it would be there at the end of the journey we are planning. A
deception yes, but I felt I was left with no other choice.
He denies having any problem and does not believe for a moment he has
alzheimers, even though he don't know his own address or state most of
the time and gets lost easily.
Again thanks to all of you for your very important posts, your timely
advice .
My husband had brain surgery in the eighties and I was told it is not
unusual for alzheimers to follow that. Besides the alzheimers diagnosis
he still has part of the tumor left which was inoperable. A very slow
growing tumor when last checked had not grown at all. But has caused
other problems.
Thank you again
Maggie

Maggie, you can buy a powder that is made for the purpose of thickening
liquids. I imagine it would be available at a medical supply store.
So glad you found someone to go with you on the trip. Pray that all will go
well.
When will you leave? Keep us posted as you are able, please.

Maggie, you can buy thickening agents at most medical supply places and
big pharmacies, or you can order on-line (probably cheaper to buy
locally though). The article mentions three brands.

Here is another article on swallowing issues
http://www.wbay.com/global/story.asp?s=1230672
People with AD end up with coordination issues, so manipulating food in
their mouths, and chewing and swallowing become difficult. They end up
having trouble with mixed textures as well, such as cereal in milk.
Thin liquids are often aspirated.
Here is a brand of thickener for liquids(there are others, this just
happens to be the one I've seen the most).

Great idea Maggie. If by chance he complains about it not being there when
you arrive, or comments on its absence later, I'm sure it will be "at the
mechanics being mended, back in a couple of days".
