We have a new doctor. Don't know if you guys remember me, but I am a nurse caregiver for Mom who has dementia, probably Alzheimer's.

The new doc wants us to try Cerefolin and then later 5 mg of Aricept. Any comments?

Mom has gotten very agitated at night now, and gets up and down a lot. She is still continent, but who knows how, because she cannot dress herself any more. Undress, absolutely, dress no ;).

How much is this stuff going to cost? Looks like some worry about that. Mom is 91, can I really expect this to do anything?

 Lesanne,

you just have to try it and see if it helps.   In my mother in law's case we thought it was doing little or nothing till we stopped for a while to try a different drug.   Wow!  the change was amazing.  I called the doctor and begged him to give her Aricept back.   The improvement was almost immediate.  She is still on it.

Chances are the aricept will help, it is also likely to arrest any further
decline, but obviously there are no guarantees. Dunno about cerefolin,
havent seen that mentioned here before as far as i remember (!!). You need
to be using aricept as soon as possible, from what you say about your mother
you may be a year or two, too late it is generally thought best at early
stages, not later. You might also look into namenda/aka memantine. Latest
result from my fathers memantine trial is that his condition has not
significantly deteriorated in the past 6 months, that might be the
memantine. using both together is generally reckoned to get the best
results.
