I have been dealing with my own mother's AZ for nearly five years now. My
aunt on my fathers side had been showing clear signs of early Alzheimer's or
dementia for almost a year. Three months ago my aunt was diagnosed with
cancer and has been receiving IV treatments for perhaps two months. She is
now so far gone mentally that today instead of a treatment she was placed in
a room in the same hospital and strapped down due to the fact she is so
agitated, recognizes no one, etc etc...
All that aside, my question is: Is this sudden progression (regression?) in
her mental state all that uncommon when the body is taking a heavy strain
such as cancer treatments?

Thanks, Jeff

oh yes.  even a low grade infection can cause serious regression.
one common reason for deterioration is urinary tract infections,
since many AD folks can't or don't recognize the symptoms and
they often have incontinence problems that only make UTIs easier
to happen.

jeff, any additional stress factors can bring about an apparent or even a
real decline.   after the stress factor is removed, it can sometimes reverse
itself, and sometimes not.  time and treatment will tell which it will be.

hope you and your family find a way to cope with her illness.
