Aricept: to continue or not to continue

I've been on 5mg of Aricept for some months (3-4). I, briefly, increased to 10mg
but, after two days, found the side-effects to invasive and went back to the
earlier dose (subsequent to discussing it with my Neurologist).

Now, even at the lower dose, I'm tempted to drop it altogether (if teh Neuro
agrees :-).

Why?

While it does seem to make my thinking clearer, I  think it has little effect on
my short term memory (how does one prove that, I don't know). I am quite unable
to carry out 3-4 instructions from my wife without forgetting the last 2 or
three. That is, focussing on carrying out the first, washes the others out of
memory.

On the other hand, I think the Aricept has reduced the frequency, somewhat, of
forgetting what I'm saying/writing.

I have said some of this before but am restating it because....... forgot :-(

I am trying to train myself to use notes..... but it's a slow process  :-)

I know I'll get some agitated replies about dropping the Aricept but it is, in
fact, out of my control. For continued cheap supply, my Neurologist has to
notify the government that a second MMS (or whatever that short memory test is
called) indicates improvement in memory since the last one. That is, reasonably,
to only supply high cost medications if they are effective for the person in
question.

While I can, I'll try to continue posting here. It does me some good and I hope
it is useful for you carers out there to have some feedback from somebody who
has the disease but can still communicate the experience (and also because I've
got little else to do - I'd love to get some work editing but haven't been able
to...... yet.

Hope you are all sober by now :-p

I would also urge you to try Namenda with the Aricept.  My mom takes both
and she's seems to be doing quite well with both medicines.

Anthony, i can only offer the experience we had with the drug, and that was
that it was very noticeably effective.   if my mother in law stopped the
drug she became noticeably more confused.   that cleared up the minute she
went back on it.

In Mom's case, she was on a low dose of Reminyl and a regular dose of
Namenda. She had been on Aricept but the side effects were such that I
requested she be taken off. I didn't know in the beginning to request a
low dose.

All this to say, I had thought about taking her off some of this when I
wasn't sure it was doing any good. But as you said, how do you know? If
you think it is helping any at all, I would recommend staying on it.

Mom had a wonderful general doctor who supplied her with samples for
over a year. If I hear you correctly, it seems you are worried about
your doctor not supplying it for free or at a reduced cost. I think I
remember someone in here recommending contacting the drug company
directly to get a reduced rate.

Anthony, I sincerely hope you can continue posting here for a long time. I
am a respite care worker with Alzheimer's Australia, and your observations
and feedback are valuable and enlightening. I have been lurking on this
group for over a year now, and have learnt more than any lecture or textbook
could ever teach me. In a way I feel guilty for being here because I want
to -- not because I have to. ("The club that nobody wants to join"). But my
aim is to be as good a carer as I possibly can be.

Go well,
Caz

Caz, I'm sure nobody is going to resent either your presence or contributions.
We are all here to learn from each other.

Good luck with the caring. My perspective is that the carers are the real
victims of this disease. So, do your best and make sure you look after yourself
first.

With luck, modern medical science will make this newsgroup redundant in the near
future.

I salute you!
