new problem for my MIL... she's now having trouble swallowing some of her
pills ... worries them in her  mouth til I finally get fed up with watching
her and trying to encourage her to take another drink, etc.... and let her
spit them out

thought maybe a spoonful of pudding or something as a chaser? Will try that
next time... but anyone got any other ideas?

My mother's Alzheimer ALF crushes her pills up and mixes them with grape
jelly.  She does just fine taking her medicine this way.

A word of caution. Some medications cannot and should not be crushed as
they will become ineffective or do damage to her stomach if they
are.Check with your pharmacist on which ones can be crushed also see if
you can get some meds supplied in liquid form.

swallowing impairments are common in AD patients, and are a sign
of an impending problem:  aspiration of food and liquids into the
lungs, which can cause pneumonia.

have the doctor refer her to a speech therapist for an evaluation
and suggestions on how and what to feed her.  speech therapists
understand how the tongue, esophagus, and trachea all work
together during swallowing.

sometimes even water has to be thickend so that folks with
swallowing problems can get it down.

for now, separating the ones she has trouble with into like size batches
seems to be working.... thanks for the suggestions though... will keep them
in mind as the situation changes *sigh*

she's losing ground so quickly now .... we've got imaginary people (she
remembers people coming in, but not leaving, so they MUST be hiding upstairs
or something, right?  There is some logic in there, I guess) ... and she's
totally giving up on so many things... even things she CAN do, she won't try
...

wasn't so long ago that she was still insistant that she was fine on her
own,  didn't have a problem, etc... now she can't turn a light on/off, get
herself a drink of water, feed the mutt,  .... it just goes on and on
