Am I being unrealistic?

I posted earlier in the week that my parents had agreed to meet with the
local Alzheimers Association rep to get more information. This was a
carefully won agreement on my part.

As soon as I returned to my home after this discussion Tuesday night, I
e-mailed the Alz lady to let her know what had transpired and to request an
appointment for next week. (It was way too late to call, even though in a
previous e-mail she gave me her cell phone number and said she answers it
24/7. Since this was not an emergency, I did not think that was necessary.)
When I had not heard from her by 5 pm the following day (Wednesday), I
figured she was having e-mail problems, as we all do from time to time, and
called her cell phone. I got her voice mail and left a message with all my
contact numbers, explaining what I wanted.

I still have not heard from her. In previous dealings it has taken more than
a week to get a return phone call, if then, from messages left on her office
phone, so I was glad to have the email and cell phone alternatives.
Apparently they don't work much better.

Although her office is local, she is supervised by a regional office about
90 minutes a way. I am reluctant to go over her head and ask for assistance
there, since this seems to be the only person I will have for that type of
sort. Of course, I'm not getting any support now, so maybe I should not
worry about a burned bridge.

Am I being unrealistic to think I should have received some response by now?
If she were on vacation or away on family business, such as an ill parent, I
would expect her voice mail to direct you to someone else who could help, or
that she would relay those messages to someone else in her office to
respond, even if just to say "She's on vacation this week -- can I help, or
would you prefer to wait for her to return?" I'd hate for my parents to
reconsider this or to start dreading her visit -- in cases like this, I
believe you should strike while the iron is hot and the spirit is willing!

What is the status of these people? Are they volunteers, paid or ...?

She's paid and full-time.

Songbird, If I were you I'd give her a little time.   Don't say anything to
your parents just yet, but keep on trying to get in touch with her.   If a
week goes by without an answer then by all means I would call the parent
office and see what is what.

probably.  it's likely that she doesn't have any office support,
except perhaps an occaional volunteer, and may only be paid to
work part time.  if you need to contact someone immediately, you
probably should contact the regional office to find out what her
schedule is.

I finally gave up today and called the national Alz hotline and asked if
there were any other way I could get assistance. I was very non-blaming,
saying perhaps the person had been reassigned or was ill.

They assured me the usual standard of care is a response within 24 hours and
I should hear something tomorrow from the regional office. (I called after 5
pm our time -- should have looked at the clock but time flies by!) We'll see
what happens next.

Will anyone here be surprised to learn I did NOT get a response? I called
again on Friday and was assured I would receive a phone call immediately --
no, that didn't happen either. Saturday I wrote an email to the head of the
regional office. Monday at 9:30 my phone rang -- we now have an appointment.
The local lady was unapologetic "I told everyone I would call you as soon as
I could" but the office head was very apologetic in an email. We meet
tomorrow night, so we'll see how that goes. Mom's remembers she agreed to
meet someone ,but was surprised Dad and I would be there too.

On top of this -- I broke my hand in a fall Saturday night -- it would be my
dominant right hand!!

Well, I am glad someone FINALLY called.  It appears you had to be persistent
in this matter.  I am so sorry to hear about your hand.  I am just
recovering from a broken ankle and know just how much trouble it can be.

I hope your hand heals quickly.

As hard as it will be, please take care of that hand.  You have to take care
of yourself first.  Glad you finally got some response.
