Howdy,

I withheld Ditropan (This medicine is an antispasmodic anticholinergic agent
used to treat overactive bladder with symptoms of urinary incontinence,
urgency, and frequency.) for a couple weeks after reading it may reduce the
effectiveness of Reminyl.

? Drug or food interactions: Cholinergic drugs may increase effects of other
drugs that also have cholinergic effects, such as tacrine (Cognex),
donepezil (Aricept), galanthamine (Reminyl), and rivastigmine (Exelon).
Anticholinergic drugs ... will likely reduce the effect of cholinergic
drugs.

Do you guys have any thoughts on this?  My Mom only needs one Ditropan xl
10mg every 3 days to get some relief, and the extra sleep for her and me are
not insignificant.  I gave her another one this morning.

Regards,
Bill

Yes, AChE inhibitors are considered cholinergic drugs and
anti-spasmodics anti-cholinergics.

Then stick with the drug; however, you might ask your doctor about
Detrol (tolterodine) which should accomplish the same effect as
Ditropan yet it isn't *as* active in the CNS.  That said, there is an
article titled:  "Tolterodine and Memory--dry but forgetful".

Unfortunately, these drugs are relatively new and the data that we
need isn't available yet.

What else is new, eh?

Take care,
Darryl.

Well, according to my mother's urologist and gerontologist, all bladder control
drugs including Detrol affect memory/orientation.

For her doctors, whether to use it, and how infrequently, has been a matter of
balancing the risk/rewards.

Have any of you found any other methods to help control bladder loss?
My mother is at the maximum dose of ditropan.  It helped for quite
awhile.  It is a huge problem now.  Mainly at night.  Any other
suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

We simply went to depends for overnight.   Eventually she needed them all
the time, but at first it was just overnight.
