Hi Barb,

My dad is on blood thinners due to the condition of his arteries, and he
also never fails to take his fish oil capsule every day along with it.   I
will be watching this thread to see if anyone has additional information
contraindicating his continuing taking fish oil with blood thinners.   His
doctor happens to be not a very good one, and may not be up on the latest
information.   I can't pursuade him to go to anyone else, however.

I do know for sure that one should not take Gingko Biloba when on blood
thinners.  They work in the same way so it conflicts.   Unsure about the
fish oil though.

Evelyn, if you do a google on blood thinners and fish oil you will see
lots of information. Essentially, because omega-3 fatty acids in the
fish oil are of themselves blood thinners, fish oil capsules should be
approached with caution by people already taking blood thinners (such
as aspirin or warfarin), anyone expecting to undergo surgery, or
hemophiliacs. The advice seems to be to always inform your health care
provider if you are taking fish oil supplements.

Dear Mary,

I am so glad this subject came up.   I knew my dad was taking the fish oil
caps, and plavix too.   I talked to him tonight and told him about this, and
he is going to stop taking the fish oil caps.   Thanks all who mentioned it.
When I saw my father a few days ago he had some bad bruises under the skin
and he said it was the result of taking the plavix.   Those little bleeds
could conceivably happen in the brain too, I thought.   Now I find out that
the fish oil he is taking could be enhancing the plavix effect.   Anyway he
isn't going to take it anymore.

Yes, good call on the fish oil supplements.  EPA (Eicosapentaenoic
acid...say that 3x fast) does thin the blood, a fact which may be
compounded by Vitamin E and even Ginkgo supplementation.  I'm not sure
about DHA (the other fish oil component).

Speaking of fish, my SO will know that the friends I've never met
provided me with the recipes.  ;-)

Check with a medic.  Unless the omega oil complex includes Vitamin E, I
am unaware that it might also be a blood thinner (E is a good one, but
getting the blood *too* thin can lead to strokes, internal bleeding,
reduced clotting, and so forth) - but because I don't know about it
doesn't make it untrue.

Blessed be,
Baird
