Haven't been in here in months. So don't know if anyone will remember me
or not? Also don't remember if I was posting back in May when my Mom had
a light stroke and went in the hospital for a few days?
Maybe a month ago we got a home health care worker who comes in twice a
week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm. That's nice. :-) Now I
don't have to worry about Mom while I go shopping.
At first I wasn't sure what to do with the extra day and 4 hours when I
didn't need to go get groceries, etc? :-) But I have partly used them at
times just to catch up on sleep! LoL
This year, after her stroke,Mom got a hospital bed and new linolium on
the living room floor through the local home health care group. :-) I
think the bed helped her bad left leg,the one with bad circulation and
that has some sores. I think having her leg elevated more in that bed
helped a lot. And the linolium is so easy to clean as compared to old
carpet! LoL A kind of funny part is Mom stopped having all those
accidents by the side of the bed after we got the new flooring! LoL
It was nice the other day to see that she still sometimes remembers
where the bathroom is.:-) She has her potty chair in here in the living
room across from her bed;but sometimes she just wants to go to the
bathroom and that's fine with me. Well, except for the fact that the
roller on the toilet paper holder disappeared the other day. So as a
temporary measure I was putting the toilet paper on the back of the
commode or hanging it on one of the two little arms that the now gone
toilet paper roller fits on. But then the toilet paper begin to
disappear from the bathroom. LoL Caught Mom bringing it out of the
bathroom tonight and told her to put it back. She said;nope. I said;yes
go put it back. Then she informed me that some people told her to bring
it in here in the living room. Well, you can't very well argue against
those people. :-) So I just left Mom alone then and now I see she has
two toilet paper rolls at the foot of her bed and there might even be
one or two under her pillow! LoL I know. But also know that we all need
to laugh sometimes. Better had to relieve some stress. And this is a
minor thing.
Ah,we also got a deadbolt lock put on the front door when the guys put
the linolium down;but I put off putting one on the back door. Didn't
think it was that needed back there and Mom had only walked off and down
to a neighbors house one time and that was last year. But she did it
again the other day. My cousin the home health care worker was here,so I
went to bed;but then I slept 2 1/2 hours past the time she left. One of
my sisters came by and woke me up and said Mom was across the road at
another neighbors. Not good as this one meant she crossed a highway. A
rural road true;but then some idiots drive so fast down it! So that was
scary to think about.
Our neighbor wasn't home when Mom got over there;but she had forgotten
to lock a door,so Mom went on in and had a good time getting to see the
neighbor's new house! LoL And I'm glad we've known that family for
years! :-)
We got Mom home and before dark I had a small chain plus a lock on the
back door. So now I can sleep when I'm tired and not have to worry about
Mom getting out. And got keys made and passed out to several family
members,so that they can get in the front door. Needed that as my
hearing is not so good at all even with one hearing aid and I don't
always know when someone is at the door.
I'm not through talking; :-) but better go for now. It's good this group
is here. :-)

We found that a kay safe next to the front door worked very well.
They are easy to use and changing the combo is easy. It worked
for allowing home health aides to get in the house.
Our 911 folks have the combination in their database, as well as
info about the oxygen and Mom's patient record number at the
hospital.

I have never heard of a key safe like that for a door;but I'm glad you
mentioned it as it makes real good sense. Not sure where to get one
though? Perhaps Wal Mart,Lowes or a local hardware store? Will have to
check online too at say Googles to see what I can find.
Does your key safe have a pad where a person just punches in the number
combination?

it's a set of pushbuttons.
the first google hit i got brought up the exact item we have:
http://www.improvementscatalog.com/Parent.asp?product=140046x&dept%5Fid=18000&su
bdept%5Fid=18120
i bought it at a local locksmith. i'm sure large hardware stores
carry them, too. it was about $30 or so, and installed with a
couple of screws inside.
it comes with instructions on how to install it and set the
combination.
there are also similar key safes with rotating numbers that you
line up for the combination, like bike locks, see
http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=47636-382-5401DCCSEN&pad=true
the advantage is that if you change health aides or respite
workers you can just change the combination --- no worry about
having lots of housekeys out.

Dennis,I put in key safe at Google and can't believe all the info that
came up! LoL

Just continueing on with a few things I didn't put in my "short" post
the other day. :-)
I'm thinking of getting a fishing license this year since we have a home
health care worker coming in twice a week for 4 hours at a time. Like I
said;I don't usually need both those days to go grocery shopping, get
Mom's meds, etc. And we have a great lake just a few miles from us,with a
nice creek running in one side. Easy to get to and just a few miles down
the road. :-) I think I would like to go fishing again. LoL Hope I can
catch something too, :-) as Mom and I love all sorts of fish and that's
something easy for her to eat.
I was brought up being taught never to lie;but now I find it best to at
times with Mom. Let me explain. :-) Like she worries about the baby,
though there is no baby, yet in her mind that baby is real. I used to
tell her the baby wasn't real and telling her that finally got to where
it really upset her and I couldn't convince her anyway. So now, when she
asks about the baby I say one of my older sisters is keeping it so that
she (Mom) can rest. That satisfies her and she usually drops off to
sleep after that.
Then there are the many deceased loved ones that she asks me where they
are at? To her, they are still alive and live close around here. So I
just tell her that they are at their own homes.
Then she asked where Dad was tonight? And he passed away over 25 years
ago. Can't tell Mom that Dad's at his own home,so I just say he's gone
off somewhere for awhile? And then I change the subject. That works so
far.
And then Mom waves to some people on TV.:-) That's been going on for
several months now. Like she may wave to Pat and Vanna when the Wheel of
Fortune show is at it's end for the day. That used to bother me;but
doesn't anymore. I just wish she enjoyed that show as much as she once
did;but it seems like she doesn't notice/keep up with nearly as much
stuff on TV shows now. Can't really tell how much or little she does
keep up with?
But the other day I swear she tried to touch someone on TV! :-) She was
standing close to the TV and just put out her hand to touch someone on
the screen. I didn't say anything about it. Didn't see any need to,so
just kept my mouth shut.
As for me,I've been raising some guineas (poultry) again. Used to have 2
to 3 dozen of them years ago. Bought 7 baby keets from a local women
back in May. Also bought 47 eggs to put in my small incubator. Got 25
guineas from that bunch of eggs. So now we have 32 guineas. Mom likes to
go out in the backyard and look at them sometimes. :-) She even shook
her cane at some of them the other day!LoL
Of my 7 oldest guineas,4 of them are guinea hens and I hope they will
start laying soon. It's time for them to;but they haven't listened to me
yet when I tell them that! LoL Hope to get more guinea eggs in the
future both for eating and setting more in my small poultry incubator. I
don't really know how many I want? 50,100? :-)
And I've also wanted to start back to raising a few Cortunix quail like
I used to years ago. But I couldn't find the small egg cups for my
incubator,so the other day I just ordered some. Now just need to clean
up my incubator somemore and run it for awhile to make sure all is
working right? Then I'll be ready to order my quail eggs. Not sure yet
if I will order 50 or a 100 eggs of two different sorts of quail? Both
types I'm set on getting are bigger than the ones I used to raise and
are good for eating and for eggs.
And then I do just a very small amount of vegetable gardening in my
yard. Have two 4x4 raised boxed beds for that and would like to add a
bit more to that. Also have my big garden outback that I haven't used in
years;but have some plans for at least part of it.
Haven't gotten much done though this late summer as I've been sick a bit
with bronchitis.
Have just been doing some things I can do in my own yard and thinking up
more things I can do there. And that way I can keep an eye on Mom too if
and when she comes outside.
One big thing I've got to remember to get the next time I go to town is
locks for our two screen doors. It's cooled off enough now so that many
times of the day we have the AC off and the wooden doors open. Only
thing how to go to sleep then as Mom can go right out those doors? I do
fall off to sleep at times;but it's not a good idea and it's not such
restful sleep when i keep waking up and looking around to make sure
she's still inside. So,gotta get those two locks for the screen doors.
About talked out again tonight, :-) so will soon hush! LoL
Lots of stress this summer and a little less now; but I'm still not in
as good a shape as I would like to be. I'm not much good at helping
others right now or even much trying to. So,hope that will be understood
in here. I want to;but I'm just not up to doing a lot right now. And
too,I have another discussion group like this where I've known a number
of people for years. Right now I'm into that group more and trying to
keep up there. (And I hate that one person in particular over there is
really trying to disrupt that group. It's really a shame when someone
trys to and does do such a thing in a group that is good for and helping
to a lot of people! <sigh> It's some better there now though.)
Thank you all again for the welcome backs. :-)

I spent a fair amount of time fishing this summer... .at least at first...
used to be that we could leave my MIL here while we went out in the boat
just in front of our place... she would sit outside and watch us ... if
she went into the house for more than a few minutes, we (my daughter and I)
would come back in .... later in the summer, we couldn't do that any
more.... she didn't want to be alone even if she COULD see me.... so a few
times, I put her in the boat and took her with me!!! Quite the production,
getting her in and out but it was worth it.... I still got to fish, and SHE
did something that she thought she couldn't do any more... and had fun doing
it.
When I redid my homecare schedule to accomodate my new work schedule, I
arranged it so that at least some of the time I'll have a 'sanity day' ....
even though I only work some Mondays, we'll have home care for all of
them... and my partner is going to take them off too, when I'm off.... so
we'll get to go fishing ... or whatever!
Last summer we tried to arrange at least a half day off together once a
week, but this year with ma needing someone here all the time it just didn't
work .... the only other person trained to cover the store is also the
person that mama sits .... so since she couldn't cover two places at once...
Anyway ...as of today, we'll have someone non-family trained to work at the
store... so we'll be able to have time off again ....I'm looking forward to
it. We've already decided that next Monday we're going to take the boat out
for the day and go fishing. It helps to have something to look forward to.

i can't think of a better way to unwind and just zone out, which
we all need to do periodically. fishing is my favorite form of
meditation (sorry, evelyn).
there is a lake on the way to work, and last year i carried a
fishing rod in my car, and sometimes stopped when i was a little
early for work. it was only a relaxing few minutes, but it was
on days when the conditions were perfect for fishing, overcast,
maybe a little foggy, but no wind. only caught a few fish, but
that wasn't what was important. what was important was to slow
down enough to really be there.
so go fish!

it's not lying, it's "loving deception". whatever keeps them
safe and happy.
and then redirect their attention.
