I talked with the nursing home this morning. The psychiatrist thinks Mom has
depression induced psychosis. I don't have a clue, but they're tapering off the
anti-psychotic drug and concentrating on anxiety and depression. The nurse
practioner thinks it will be better if I don't visit for a few days. That was
already running around in my mind. I won't go back until Monday unless they
call me for an emergency. I'm looking for another support group, but there's
not much here in my town. I'll check with the ALZ office in Atlanta and, of
course, I'll hang around here. Thank you so much. You are a terrific bunch of
folks!!!!!!!!!

I'm about an hour northeast of Atlanta near Lake Lanier. Where were you born?

Becky, I was born in Dodge County (near Eastman, Dublin) and was there
except for 6 months in the 10th grade, then graduated from Chester High
School (11 grades in 1945).  We moved to Savannah where I met and married my
husband and where my daughter graduated from high school, and she went to
college at Brewton Parker, moved around to Wisconsin, Florida, Missippi, and
back to the Atlanta area for 20 years
(Decatur & Conyers). Our son went to North Georgia College for a year. Then
we retired to Lake County, Florida in 1989 and lived there until May of
2000, when we moved to Montgomery, AL. where our son lives. Grayson died in
March 2001, so I am very happy to be near my children.

passing..

wise advice..Thank you

daughter's birthday-praying that all goes well & Don doesn't act
up....he's pretty docile now, Hope he sleeps most of the way as he does
here...
Fingers crossed;;;;;;;

Florence, thanks for the kind words.  I don't post as much as I did
previously. There are others who give such good advice and information that
I don't think there is anything that I could add.  But I do still read; too
much of a habit to break by now.  Hope you will have a wonderful trip for
your daughter's birthday and that Don will do well on the trip also.

I have heard that psychosis is common in the elderly when going through
depression so your Mom is not alone in that. Do they feel that your Mom needs
to have a few days to get used to being there and depending on people who are
not you?  So that when you come and then leave again, she doesn't feel so
panicky?

I've heard of that same approach being tried with children who are placed in
institutional settings such as boarding schools for autistic or mentally or
behaviorally challenged children.  I guess it gives people a chance to become
attached to the setting they are in.

Yes, in fact I stayed away for a few days after she was first admitted. Didn't
seem to help much, but she wasn't this bad. I know I'm doing all I can do. I
just need to leave it up to them. Still, I want to rush out there since I feel
no one can take care of her the way I do. I'm trying.
