Dr. Down described in some detail the unusual features
of these cases that simply did not fit the typical
clinical picture of mental retardation that he had been
accustomed to seeing. In these children the early months
of childhood were uneventful and "intelligence dawned in
the accustomed way." But later, around age six or so,
"a change took place in that the child's look had lost
its wonted brightness; it took less notice of those
around it; many of its movements became rhythmical and
automatic." There was "cessation of increasing intelligence",
deferred speech and "lessened responsiveness to all the
endearments of its friends." Dr. Down writes "I have had
many examples of children who had spoken well and with
understanding, but who lost speech at the period of the
second dentition, and had also suspension of mental growth."
Dr. Down provides several examples. One was a boy who
"attracted no particular attention during the first six
years of life" but then "during the period of second
dentition" suddenly lost speech. "He heard everything
that was said, but never replied to a question." This
child did gradually regain some speech but "afterwards
always spoke of himself in the third person." The other
case example was that of two brothers who also "both
lost speech at the period of second dentition."

What happened at the "second dentition?"

Since it's a short page and Scudamore still hasn't figured
out how to cut and paste his own material, I'll quote the
whole thing as if he had had the courtesy to post it himself:

> [Major indication autism is mostly vaccine caused.]

Well, that's convincing -- if you say so, how can anyone
doubt it?

Obviously, someone who never looked very hard.  The post
at the beginning of the thread (John didn't have the
courtesy to quote it) cites several.

> "They claim that autism naturally occurs at about 18

Well, I *could* jump to the obvious conclusion that
Rimland (who makes his living from telling people that
vaccines cause all the ills of mankind) is simply lying.
However, I'll be charitable and simply point out that he
might be utterly clueless, since late-onset autism was
well established in the literature more than a century
ago as a distinct and fairly common developmental disability.
(Again, original post cited source.)

It's really quite impressive that John's only response to
my citation of original sources for the existence of late
onset autism over a century ago is to quote the unsupported
opinions of people with a conflict of interest while ignoring
conflicting original sources:

You quackpots.

Rimland is independent.  http://www.whale.to/vaccine/ploy.html

My, that's a devastating rebuttal to a post that proves
that you've been lying and passing on the lies of others
regarding regressive autism.  It certainly demolishes
my sources point-by-point beyond any doubt.

> Rimland is independent.  http://www.whale.to/vaccine/ploy.html

Well, yes, he's independent -- the dead usually are.

While alive, on the other hand, he supported himself with
books and speaking tours which depended on the (proven false)
notion that autism is something new.  In your case, ignorance
is a reasonable excuse -- Rimland, on the other hand, had
no excuse for ignoring the documented history of developmental
disabilities going back hundreds of years.
