The Colorado Plateau is easier to get to and no need for rats;
the prairie dogs are quite easy to find.
Alternately, I stopped at a New Mexico campground this weekend
and the signs warned that the local fox population was positive
for rabies. They're cute and, oddly enough, get friendly when
infected.
