Does anyone know what this piece of machinery was called?

I think I can remember back in the late 50's or early 60's that in
doctor's offices they used to have a little machine that people sat
in, or put their bodies in, that made them sweat?  I vaguely remember
seeing one at a doctor's office when I was kid, but I was reading this
book and it talks about this girls grandma having to do to the doctor
to get some "steam," to clean out her system, and to "dry her out."
Does anyone recall anything like this?  And if so, what was it
called and what was the purpose?

  Thank you.

Steam cabinets, they were used as a mini-sauna.
They were also ABused as weight-loss devices, by
inducing dehydration.  Nasty, evil, dangerous.

I remember seeing them in doctor's offices -- and
even on a couple of soap operas or t.v. shows.  Were
they used to treat alcohol disorders?  The book I am reading,
makes mention of no condition, but refers to drying Grandma
out on a couple of character descriptions of "Grandma."

When did they discontinue these machines?
How long where they around I wonder?  Was their a peer reviewed
journal for their use?   <ha>
