The Journal of the American Medical Association is asking that researchers disclose their financial renumeration when publishing research. It would seem that in the testing of Vioxx, a recalled drug which caused enormous harm, various deleterious effects revealed in the tests were discounted, suppressed or otherwise ignored while positive results were emphasized. IN addition, JAMA suggest that pharmaceutical companies stop financing the drug "education" courses required to be taken by some physicians to maintain their certification. I'd say news like that indicates that it is the pharmaceutical and other health industries that seem to be doing the ... winky winky. What you should realize is that through the 80's and 90's, the FDA was pressured by NeoKKKonservativs to reduce the amount and quality of testing of new drugs. The argument was that the slow rate of testing was holding back chemi-medical progress. So the FDA was ordered by RepubliKKKans when the came into power to do what the NeoKKKonservatives demanded. And as a result, there are a zillion new knock off drugs on the market that are no better - or worse than the tried and true medications, and these and other new medications get through the (now lax) FDA screening process without the side effects being properly identified and examined.
