i did this snowboarding. I caught an edge fell forwards and smashed
my right shoulder when i wasnt looking in front of me. not sure if it
was my fault or the new boards i bought that day or both. i am
writing this with only my left hand hence all the lower case.
anyone had this problem? any advice? i did it yesterday. just come
back from the clinic where they x-rayed it and gave me a clavicle
strap? is this correct? the western physio i called told me they
usually use a sling. they told me to keep this strap thing on all
the time even when sleeping.

Snowboards go where you point them, and unless you're *really*
good they go where you look. Catching an edge when you're
looking another direction is extremely common.
Normally I'm a very vocal advocate of wrist braces, but this
is one case where they won't help you.

Well, first off this is misc.health.ALTERNATIVE. Unless
you're looking for someone to tell you that the solution to
a clavicular fracture is to take a mix of cellsalts, you're
not going to get much help here.
--- HOWEVER ---
As a ski patroller I've seen a few and talked about them
with orthopods. Apparently there's some dispute over
whether strapping a clavicle gets better results than a
simple sling (the straps used to be pretty much universal).
If you want an informed answer, find someone who actually
knows what he's doing, has the X-rays, and is prepared to
take some responsibility for *your* case. This newsgroup
ain't any of them.
Further deponent sayeth naught.

Yes, a clavicle strap is a standard measure. I've my doubts about
a sling for a clavicle fracture. For you're rehab you'll need a
dumbbell
set or similar. It will take 2 to 3 months to get back to pretty good.
It will
ache in the cold or with hard use but it will be working.
Yes, wear the "strap" in bed. I won't sleep on the fractured side.
Don't let the MD go hog wild with the x-rays as they won't speed
you recovery. If you need a release to go back to work get
the follow ups then. Use the dumbbells when you are able
as this will help the bone and the strength recovery.

A newsgroup or the internet should never be the place where you get
medical advice. Ideas yes, but never
medical advice. I see you are in Japan, I would check with your
physician to find out the best treatment.
