Under-the-tongue vaccine could help lick the flu Needles might no longer be needed to protect against the seasonal bug

WASHINGTON - Relief may be on the way for all those youngsters trembling at the thought of another needle jab. One day, the flu vaccine may simply be placed under the tongue.
Korean researchers say the new vaccine worked in mice, avoiding not only the painful prick but also the discomfort some people feelfrom the inhaled vaccine.
The team led by Dr. Mi-Na Kweon of the International VaccineInstitute in Seoul reported their findings in Monday's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Better ways of delivering vaccine have long been under study, ranging from orally to inhaled, but all seem to have drawbacks.
**Now, Kweon and colleagues say, two doses of influenza vaccine under the tongues of mice primed the animals' immune system to fight off what would otherwise have been a deadly dose of flu.**
**Next, they are turning their attention to people, to see if under- the-tongue vaccine also prompts a strong immune response.**
**Placing a couple of drops of liquid under the tongue gets the vaccine directly to mucus membranes and prompts a response both in mucus tissues throughout the body as well as in the immune system itself, the researchers said.**
"These studies provide a basis for further human testing of this alternative form of needle-free vaccination.
**Aside from itsconvenience, sublingual vaccination appears to disseminate immunity to a broader range of organs than the classical routes of injectingor ingesting vaccines,'' said Dr. Cecil Czerkinsky, deputy director-general for laboratory science at the Institute.**
"If these findings are replicated in humans, they could pave the way for the development of a new generation of vaccines that could be used for mass vaccination against respiratory infections, including the pandemic avian-human influenza viruses,'' he said in a statement.
Several research efforts applying vaccine to mucus membranes have been tried, seeking to avoid both the needle sticks that people dislike and the harsh environment of the digestive systemthat can damage or destroy a vaccine.
**Studies of under-the-tongue use of other medicines have also been done.**
Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University noted that recent flu studies have involved nasal sprays.
However, he said while he had expected people to be averse to needles, he was surprised to discover that "many people are averse to people messing with their nose ... so there are limitations to nasal spray.''
So for researchers looking for another means of doing this, "just a drop under the tongue at least will protect mice ... that's a very exciting and promising line of investigation,'' said Schaffner, who was not part of the research team.
And, he added, "if we were faced with a pandemic, the easier and more acceptable we can make the distribution of the vaccine, the more rapidly we can protect a proportion of population.''
Kweon also said that with a nasal spray there might be a chance of a vaccine affecting the central nervous system, which is not a risk of the under-the-tongue vaccine.
**The under-the-tongue vaccine worked whether it was a live or inactivated virus, Kweon reported.**
And, she added, it could also be flavored to make it more acceptable.

Homeopathy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Nosode)
**Homeopathic remedies are made from substances that, in undiluted form, cause symptoms similar to the disease they aim to treat.**
At the time of the inception of homeopathy, the late 1700s, mainstream medicine employed such measures as bloodletting and purging, the use of laxatives and enemas, and the administration of complex mixtures, such as theriac, which was made from 64 substances including opium, myrrh, and viper's flesh.[19][20] Such measures often worsened symptoms and sometimes proved fatal.[21] While the virtues of these treatments had been extolled for centuries,[22] Hahnemann rejected such methods as irrational and unadvisable.[23] Instead, he favored the use of single drugs at lower doses
Hahnemann also advocated various lifestyle improvements to his patients, including exercise, diet, and cleanliness.
Hahnemann came to believe that all effective drugs produce symptoms in healthy individuals similar to those of the diseases that they can treat. This later became known as the "law of similars", the most important concept of homeopathy.[1] The term "homeopathy" was coined by Hahnemann and first appeared in print in 1807, although he began outlining his theories of "medical similars" in a series of articles and monographs in 1796.
**Law of similars** From this Hahnemann conceived of the "law of similars", otherwise known as "like cures like" (Latin: similia similibus curentur). Hahnemann believed that by inducing artificial symptoms of a disease, the artificial symptoms would create another disturbance in the vital force thus pushing out the old disturbance and that the body would naturally recover from the artificially induced disturbance. The basic idea is that to cure a person suffering from an illness, one should administer a dilute dose of a substance that produces the same symptoms of the illness being treated in healthy individuals.
**Isopathy** Isopathy is a therapy derived from homeopathy and was invented by Johann Joseph Wilhelm Lux in the 1830s.[67] Isopathy differs from homeopathy in general in that the remedies are made up either from things that cause the disease, or from products of the disease, such as pus. Many so-called "homeopathic vaccines" are a form of isopathy.
rpautrey2 - 29 Jan 2008 08:57 GMT Excerpts From: www.homeopathy.healthspace.eu
What is isopathy Isopathy, giving nosodes or other remedies supposing to be equal to the disease is not according to traditional theory of homeopathy, therefore the therapy is not "homeopathy" but related to homeopathy and often used with it. Hahnemann:
§ 56 Sixth Edition A third mode of employing medicines in diseases has been attempted to be created by means of Isopathy, as it is called - that is to say, a method of curing a given disease by the same contagious principle that produces it. But even granting this could be done, yet, after all, seeing that the virus is given to the patient highly potentized, and consequently, in an altered condition, the cure is effected only by opposing a simillimum to a simillimum. (Organon) Mostly homeopaths try to give the simillimum, this means not giving the remedy equal but similar to the disease. In psychology similarity appeal to the associative abilities, this is well known in education when working with metaphors.11
There are some forms of isopathy for example: nosodetherapy and tautopathy
Homeopathy and vaccination The view of Hahnemann on vaccination is still accepted by homeopaths, he was against the current kind of vaccination by giving the identical (maybe weakened) or same pathogen; this is what he said:
But to use a human morbific matter (a Psorin taken from the itch in man) as a remedy for the same itch or for evils arisen therefrom, stay away from it! Nothing can result from this but trouble and aggravation of the disease. Organon § 56 6th. edition Another known homeopath said in line of Hahnemann: giving the identical instead of the similar means the difference between isopathy and homoeopathy.12 According to the philosophy of homeopathy, the body could become susceptible to "morbific noxious agents". The challenge of the homeopath is to prevent disease in the first place with the first sign of symptoms, this could be imminent long before an acute disease appears. Hahnemann: The inimical forces, partly psychical, partly physical, to which our terrestrial existence is exposed, which are termed morbific noxious agents, do not possess the power of morbidly deranging the health of man unconditionally; but we are made ill by them only when our organism is sufficiently disposed and susceptible to attack of the morbific cause that may be present, and to be altered in its health, deranged and made to undergo abnormal sensations and functions - hence they do not produce disease in every one nor at all times. Organon § 31 Hahnemann acknowledged the interaction of two similar diseases, this is how he classified succeeded vaccination: Universal vaccination put an end to all epidemics of that deadly fearful smallpox to such an extent that the present generation does no longer possess a clear conception of the former frightful smallpox plague. Organon § 56 Hahnemann gave some examples where a similar (and not a identical) disease could cure a disease to prove the similia principle. When an epidemic is near, one or a few remedies could be chosen to treat a population in order to prevent the epidemic. See Organon § 33. Hahnemann gave this the description of acute collective diseases. Organon § 73. When the disease is there, according to Hahnemann, the homeopath observes:
the sketch of the disease picture becomes ever more and more complete, not more spun out and verbose, but more significant (more characteristic), and including more of the peculiarities of this collective disease; on the one hand, the general symptoms (e.g., loss of appetite, sleeplessness, etc.) become precisely defined as to their peculiarities; and on the other, the more marked and special symptoms which are peculiar to but few diseases and of rarer occurrence, at least in the same combination, become prominent and constitute what is characteristic of this malady disease. 56 Fifth Edition The third and only remaining method1 of employing medicines in diseases, which, besides the other two just alluded to, is the only other possible one, is the antipathic (enantiopathic) or palliative method, wherewith the physician could hitherto appear to be most useful, and hoped most certainly to gain his patient's confidence by deluding him with momentary amelioration. But I shall now proceed to show how inefficacious and how injurious this third and sole remaining way was, in diseases of a not very rapid course. It is certainly the only one of the modes of treatment adopted by the allopaths that had any manifest relation to a portion of the sufferings caused by the natural disease; but what kind of relation? Of a truth the very one (the exact contrary of the right one) that ought most to be avoided if we would not delude and make a mockery of the patient affected with a chronic disease.
1 A fourth mode of employing medicines in diseases has been attempted to be created by means of Isopathy, as it is called - that is to say, a method of curing a given disease by the same contagious particle that produces it. But even granting this could be done, which would certainly be a valuable discovery, yet, after all, seeing that the virus is given to the patient highly potentized, and thereby, consequently, to a certain degree in an altered condition, the cure is effected only by opposing a simillimum to a simillimum.
56 Sixth Edition By means of this palliative (antipathic, enantiopathic) method, introduced according to Galen's teaching Contraria contrariis for seventeen centuries, the physicians hitherto could hope to win confidence while they deluded with almost instantaneous amelioration. But how fundamentally unhelpful and hurtful this method of treatment is (in diseases not running a rapid course) we shall see in what follows. It is certainly the only one of the modes of treatment adopted by the allopaths that had any manifest relation to a portion of the sufferings caused by the natural disease; but what kind of relation? Of a truth the very one (the exact contrary of the right one) that ought carefully to be avoided if we would not delude and make a mockery of the patient affected with a chronic disease1.
1 A third mode of employing medicines in diseases has been attempted to be created by means of Isopathy, as it is called - that is to say, a method of curing a given disease by the same contagious principle that produces it. But even granting this could be done, yet, after all, seeing that the virus is given to the patient highly potentized, and consequently, in an altered condition, the cure is effected only by opposing a simillimum to a simillimum.
To attempt to cure by means of the very same morbific potency (per Idem) contradicts all normal human understanding and hence all experience. Those who first brought Isopathy to notice, probably thought of the benefit which mankind received from cowpox vaccination by which the vaccinated individual is protected against future cowpox infection and as it were cured in advance. But both, cowpox and smallpox are only similar, in no way the same disease. In many respects they differ, namely in the more rapid course and mildness of cowpox and especially in this, that is never contagious to man by more nearness. Universal vaccination put an end to all epidemics of that deadly fearful smallpox to such an extent that the present generation does no longer possess a clear conception of the former frightful smallpox plague.
Moreover, in this way, undoubtedly, certain diseases peculiar to animals may give us remedies and thus happily enlarge our stock of homoeopathic remedies.
But to use a human morbific matter (a Psorin taken from the itch in man) as a remedy for the same itch or for evils arisen therefrom is - ?
Nothing can result from this but trouble and aggravation of the disease.

Hey, RA, Hahnemann was spot on with his concept that there are no diseases as such, there are only dis-eases.
Allowing that a dis-ease like a cold or the flu is the body's attempt to purify the "internal milieu" to allow for internal cleanliness and to provide a longer, more healthful life, of what value are poisons for the body's effort? This is why allopathy is a failed theory of medicine, the allopath wishes to fight the healing effort with strong poisons. In a similar manner, does a healing body need help to recover? Maybe. What the body needs are not the poisons of the allopath nor the less poisonus remedies of the homeopath. What the body needs is rest, fresh air, clean water, sunshine, and , usually, no cooked food or even no food at all for a time.
Anyway, I can agree that homeopathy is more beneficial than the actions and poisons of the allopath. However, I think the actions and knowledge of the Orthopath are superior to the homeopath.
Have healthy day.

So why don't some people live forever? Assuming that "internal cleanliness" or whatever hype you're promoting is key to freedom from "dis-ease", how long should people live?

<whrwnd> I agree with Dr. Cee. Does a healing body need help to recover? This is a very good question and how one answers it will determine which medical philosophy one leans towards. The body heals itself is a universal truth and a given. If toxic overload and poor nutrition are truly the root causes for all disease, then logically, removing and avoiding the toxins and eating highly nutritious meals is the cure for all disease. The introduction of poisons to the body serves no real purpose if the above statements are correct. Furthermore, if the above statements are correct, the introduction of poisons to the body actually cause disease. The greatest healer of all time once said, "A wicked tree can not bear good fruit." A poison can not bear good health. One can not extract things from an unclean sitation and expect it to clean-up another situation. This why I disagree with allopathy, the have the wrong answer to the question above. Live long and prosper. whrlwnd>
