An authoritative Cochrane review based on a meta-analysis of randomized,
double blind, placebo controlled studies supports the use of hawthorn
(/Crataegus/) extract in heart failure:

I don't suppose that you could give a definition of the term
"Meta-analysis".
Extracts from the Hawthorne berry has been in use by medicine for over a
hundred years. Both in treatment and more recently (50 years+) in diagnoses.
I use
a compound daily that finds it's origins in the Hawthorne berry ( as a
vaso-dilator).
The fact that the Hawthorne contains a chemical that is a cardiac stimulant
has been
known by medical science for well over a hundred years.

Combining the results of several prior studies.
Depending on the weights given, the result can sometimes be
illuminating (pulling subtle effects out of the noise) or
deceptive (by weighing positive results more than negative,
for instance.)

As a result, they can be controversial.

There is nothing new for me either. The point in my posting was that the
evidence of its benefits is getting stronger. Many physicians in particular
are very sceptical if there is no solid scientific support backing the
treatment, which is very understandable of course.
