Dentist 'used his surgical tools to clean out his ears'

A dentist could be struck off over allegations that he routinely used
surgical instruments to clean out his ears and fingernails before
treating
his unsuspecting patients.

Alan Hutchinson, 51, is also accused of urinating into the surgery
sink, not
wearing gloves while treating patients and failing to wash his hands
between
appointments.

The married father of three, whose son is also a dentist, is expected
to
face the General Dental Council next month to face a catalogue of
charges.

His apparent lack of hygiene whilst carrying out treatment was
revealed by
the GDC and follows a complaint made last year by a patient.

The unnamed woman, whose family also attended his surgery in Batley,
West
Yorkshire, claims he refused to wear gloves when removing a wisdom
tooth.

Patient A, who had seen Hutchinson for 16 years up to that point,
alleges he
did not wash his hands unless specifically requested to do so and says
when
she complained to him about his hygiene standards he behaved in a
"flippant
manner".

It was when staff and other patients were interviewed as part of an
inquiry
into this complaint that further claims were made.

Hutchinson, who was suspended from practising when the allegations
came to
light last October, could be removed from the dental register if,
under new
guidelines, he is found to be unfit to practise. He denies the
allegations.

Hutchinson, who qualified in 1977 after training at Leeds University,
is
said to have used the dental equipment to clean his fingernails and
ears
before replacing it on a tray alongside sterilised instruments.

On its website the GDC said: "The dental instruments with which you
cleaned
your nails and ears were, along with other instruments on the tray,
liable
to be used on a patient without being re-sterilised."

It also refers to an incident on March 9 last year in which he
urinated into
a sink at the surgery before treating patients.

"After doing so you did not wash your hands before commencing
treatment on a
patient," it adds.

"You treated the next patient you saw without wearing any gloves."

Hutchinson, a Rotarian in his home town of Batley, is also said to
have
placed used drill burrs used to file down rough edges back among
sterilised
burrs. The GDC charges state: "During the period from about February
1990 to
June 2006, after using a drill on a patient you would regularly put
the used
drill burr back on a stand alongside sterilised burrs awaiting use.

"The used drill burrs referred to were not then distinguishable from
sterilised burrs and were liable to be used on a subsequent patient
or
patients without being sterilised."

It is claimed that Hutchinson failed to take adequate steps to
protect
himself, his dental nurses and his patients against the risk of
cross-infection and in doing so acted in an "inappropriate and
unprofessional' manner 'contrary to the best interests of patients".

After the investigation began against him, the dentist travelled in
November
to Ghana, where he visited a series of villages, hospitals and prisons
as
part of a charity project to improve dental services in Africa.

Hutchinson, who has two sons and a daughter aged from 16 to 24, took
part in
the trip despite being suspended.

After seeing a presentation by the charity Mercy Ships, he said: "It
made me
realise that with the skills I have I could make a difference to the
people
involved."

He added: "I have had to register with the Ghanaian General Dental
Council
on a temporary basis."

His disciplinary hearing, which will take place in London, is expected
to
last three days and will begin on April 2.
