Can somebody with a Merck tell me the solubility in ethyl alcohol (95%
or lower) of Oenothein B; CAS.NO:104987-36-2 ?
I don't live near a major library. If it's not in the Merck, where
could I get the info?
I know it's very soluble in water.
Oenothein B is an ellagitannin found in some plants that is a 5-Alpha-
Reductase-Inhibitor, and has shown anti-tumor acitivity in laboratory
tests (prostate cancer cell line). (I don't want to get into
supporting/defending/explaining it here, the patents and references
can be found with Google - Epilobium plant species)
It's full name:
D-Glucose, cyclic 4,6-(4-(6-carboxy-2,3,4-trihydroxyphenoxy)-4',5,5',
6,6'-pentahydroxy(1,1'-biphenyl)-2,2'-dicarboxylate) 2-(2-((6,6'-
dicarboxy-2,2',3,3',4'-pentahydroxy(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-yl)oxy)-3,4,5-
trihydroxybenzoate) 3-(3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate), cyclic ester with D-
glucose 3-(3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate), (2(S),4(S))-
Thanks

United States Patent Application 20030004131 shows the structure of
Oenothein B. You'll need to install a Tiff viewer to view the image
form of the patent application. If you have a Tiff viewer installed
you can go directly to the structural image with this URL:

The patent application mentions aqueous extracts only. The structure
of Oenothein B shows it is bristling with phenolic hydroxyls. Hence it
is very polar. It is unlikely to be any more soluble in ethanol than
any carbohydrate.
