CCHR is at it again.

The Myth of "The Myth of Mental Illness"

On Saturday, September 9, 2007, Professor Robert Spillane of the
Macquarie Graduate School of Management addressed a dinner meeting of
Australian Skeptics in Sydney. The topic of his talk was The Mind and
Mental Illness: A Tale of Two Myths. I wrote a brief response at the
time, but I wanted to wait until Professor Spillane's written version
of the speech had been published in "the Skeptic" before doing much
more. The article attracted more critical responses than anything
published in the journal for some time. You can read Professor
Spillane's article here, and my response appears below.

You'd know Peter.
Actually what CCHR says is that it can't be proven scientifically.

What CCHR says is that it doesn't exist.

You obviously have no idea what "narcissism" means Jan.

Here is an example, said by the founder of Scientology (the people who
bring us CCHR and much criticism of psychiatry). Do you agree with Mr
Hubbard that he is going to be resurrected?

"I will soon leave this world only to return and complete my mission
with another identity. ...

"I will return not as a religious leader but a political one. That
happens to be the requisite beingness for the task at hand. I will not
be known to most of you, my activities misunderstood by many, yet
along with your constant effort in the theta band I will effectively
postpone and then halt a series of events designed to make happy
slaves of us all".

Here's another quote from the same Hubbard paper. As you support
Scientology's attitude to psychiatry, surely you must also agree with
L Ron Hubbard opinion of Jesus when he said:

"For those of you whose Christian toes I may have stepped on, let me
take the opportunity to disabuse you of some lovely myths. For
instance, the historic Jesus was not nearly the sainted figure has
been made out to be. In addition to being a lover of young boys and
men, he was given to uncontrollable bursts of temper and hatred that
belied the general message of love, understanding and other typical
Marcab PR. You have only to look at the history his teachings inspired
to see where it all inevitably leads. It is historic fact and yet man
still clings to the ideal, so deep and insidious is the biologic
implanting".
