DCF to fire worker for nude appearance on Howard Stern show

By Kathleen Chapman

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

WEST PALM BEACH - Department of Children and Families supervisors say
they will fire a child abuse investigator who took off her clothes on
the Howard Stern show.

When she came into work Monday, Alison Cushman received a letter that
says she has 10 days to respond before losing her job.

Cushman first got naked in an appearance on Stern's radio show in
February 2005. Nearly a year later, fellow state employees saw Cushman
on a televised replay. Those workers said Cushman identified herself as
a child abuse investigator for the state of Florida on the show,
according to state records.

When Cushman's bosses found out about the 2005 incident two months ago,
they warned her that she was one step from being fired for "conduct
unbecoming a public employee."

"You admitted to the behavior and apologized for not exercising good
judgement," interim DCF District Administrator Deborah Fenstermaker
wrote.

But Cushman returned to the show April 4 on a trip to New York with her
new husband, Boynton Beach police Detective Troy Raines. Photos of her
naked are posted on Stern's Web site.

Although Cushman was on vacation at the time of her appearance, state
employees are warned that they can get in trouble for conduct both on
and off the job, DCF spokeswoman Marilyn Muñoz said.

Cushman, 31, was hired by the DCF in 2003 after working as a probation
officer, an investigator for the public defender and a social worker
helping mentally ill people.

As a child abuse investigator, Cushman has been responsible for looking
into allegations that children were harmed and helping to decide
whether they should be taken into state foster care.

According to a summary on the show's Web site, Raines also appeared on
the show and gave Stern a replica of his police badge.

Boynton Beach police spokesman Lt. Jeff Katz said supervisors will
speak with Raines when he returns to work today.

"We will review everything that occurred," Katz said. "We will see if
there was any clear identification he made linking him to the
department."

Commentary: DCF needs to buff up on Stern gig
By Frank Cerabino   Palm Beach Post Columnist  Wednesday, April 12,
2006

From: Department of Children and Families District Office

To: Staffers
Subject: Guidelines for appearances on Howard Stern Show

As many of you know, we have decided to terminate child abuse
investigator Alison Cushman for removing her clothing during a recent
appearance on Howard Stern's satellite radio show.

While we understand it was the best way for Cushman to prove to the
talk-show host how much weight she had lost from her previous naked
appearance on his show, it was a regrettable lack of judgment to strip
on the radio show.

She already had been warned not to strip again on the radio show -
and she did it anyway.

And yes, we took into account that she was on vacation. And that she
was on a subscription-only radio show with a police escort - her
husband, a Boynton Beach police officer.

But we were faced with this one overriding fact: She got naked on the
radio.

And we as an organization can't stand for that.

Millions of people pay money to tune into the Stern show, hoping to
listen to women take off their clothes. We are not sure why.

But we find this disturbing. Perhaps even borderline abusive.

So when this abuse happens to one of our abuse investigators, we have
to take a stand against this aural nudity, before it leads to...
posting naked photos of our employees online.

Which has happened in this case.

By the way, we'd like to congratulate Alison on her diet and wish her
well. The "before and after" photos of Alison on the Stern show Web
site demonstrate that our soon-to-be-terminated employee did do a
commendable job of self improvement! Well done, Ali.

However, we cannot stand idly by to see the words "DCF" and "lost" in
the same sentence - even if it's "pounds" and not "kids" this time.

So Alison will be leaving us.

There will not be a goodbye cake, which under the circumstances is
probably best for everybody involved.

And from this day forward, we would request that all employees
understand the ground rules for any future appearances you may make on
the Howard Stern Show.

While we cannot prevent you from appearing on the show, we would ask
that, if you do find yourself on the Stern show, you use the
opportunity to promote DCF in a wholesome way.

To that end, here are 8 Dos and Don'ts for DCF Workers on the Howard
Stern Show:

1. Do explain how you are touched by working with children. Don't let
yourself be touched by Baba Booey.

2. If asked for numbers, do talk about the clients served. Don't talk
about your measurements.

3. When discussing your fantasy, do talk about eliminating child abuse.
Don't talk about the stripper in the green room.

4. Do talk about bending over backwards to follow the law. Don't bend
over in any direction to follow Stuttering John's suggestions.

5. Do chew the fat with Stern. Don't show the fat to Stern.

6. Do turn around public opinion by showing a good side of DCF. Don't
turn around to show a better side of yourself.

7. Do wear something professional. But don't make it look like the
oldest profession.

8. Do set ground rules for your appearance. Don't allow those rules to
involve sitting on anything - living or inanimate - that moves.

Please explain your point, greegor, and what precisely the problem is here.

Exactly what did CPS do that was wrong or more important, what did they
do that was RIGHT, and how many CPS workers have you heard of that
stripped in public?

We will await your usual evasions and lies with considerable interest.

THERE'S STILL WORK TO DO

Howard had a woman named Alison, a former guest who promised she'd
lose weight when she made her first appearance at KROCK, back in the
studio this morning. Alison told Howard that he originally wanted her
to lose 29 pounds, but he insisted that he actually demanded she drop
39 pounds. Alison then noted that she used to weigh 159 pounds and
that, in the past year, she's been able to drop 18 of those pounds.
Alison went on to mention that the first 10 pounds she lost were easy,
but that it wasn't until she STOPPED DRINKING in January that she was
able to shed the final eight. Upon seeing her, Artie asked Alison if
she was drinking mayonnaise at her top weight.

As Alison began disrobing, Gary noted that her stomach looked flat, but
Howard said he wanted to see her naked before he offered his opinion.
Howard then commented, once Alison was naked, that she "lost some of
the saddlebags on her sides," and that her stomach and breasts looked
great, as he thought they did before. Howard also mentioned that
Alison's rear end looked "better," but that she needed to get on
the scale so he could see if she'd actually lost as much weight as
she claimed.

Before she stepped on the scale, Alison told Howard that, as of March
26th, she weighed 138 pounds, but it was revealed that today she
weighed in at 142 pounds. Howard proceeded to tell Alison that her
thighs and rear end were "still lumpy," and that she should aim at
reaching the 125 pound-plateau. Howard added that Alison was on the
verge of being "extremely hot," but that she needed to make "big
changes" on the bottom half of her body.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS WITH AN OFFICER

Alison announced that her husband was in the green room and he wanted
to come into the studio to meet Howard. After Howard granted Alison's
request, her husband said that he's a police officer, before also
mentioning that one of his best friends was responsible for one of the
"Cops" tazing clips that's been made famous on the show. When
Howard asked Alison's husband if his wife ever tosses his salad,
Artie commented that, from his viewpoint, she "wasn't tossing
enough salad." Alison's husband then presented Howard with a shirt
and a replica of his badge before noting that it was his wife's idea
to lose weight and that he had nothing to do with her decision.

So what is your issue, Greg?

Do you, for instance, believe that had this been a women with children
that CPS would have investigated her and her husband for child abuse?

If you think so, could you provide some examples?

Of course you believe this, right?

You don't believe the journalist made this up with tongue in cheek, right?

You don't know the difference between "reporting" and "Commentary" (the
latter being the name of this section of the newspaper posting this)?

But you do love innuendo, right?

So tell us, Greg, how many children have been removed from their parents
by CPS for appearing nude in public, or even for being paid prostitutes?

I won't hold my breath waiting for you to answer, but if you do, please
attribute me exactly. I get tired of you lying by omission.

Oh, and just to refresh your memory, do you know how many times the
shower issue has come up and been discussed and answered, yet you bring
it up AGAIN?

Don't you get tired of the same old thing, and you being shown AGAIN to
be a fool who cared not a whit for the little girl and her relationship
with her mother?
