WASHINGTON - Senators asked Congress's investigative arm Wednesday to
look into the Food and Drug Administration's practice of letting
scientists serve on its advisory panels even if they have conflicts of
interest.

"We are concerned about the process that supports FDA's decisions to
waive conflicts-of-interest rules for scientists with financial ties
to the manufacturers of the products under consideration, or their
competitors," senators said in a letter sent Wednesday to the
Government Accountability Office.

It was signed by Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the chairman of the Health,
Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and panel members Edward M.
Kennedy, D-Mass., and Richard Durbin, D-Ill.

Members of FDA advisory committees are required by law to be free of
conflicts of interest concerning products they discuss and recommend
for approval. The FDA, however, can grant a waiver if an adviser's
scientific expertise outweighs the risk of a conflict, or if the
financial interest is small.

"These practices appear to have undermined the public's faith in the
objectivity and fairness of FDA's advisory committees," the senators
said in the letter.

Senators noted allegations of conflicts among the FDA panels that
studied Cox-2 inhibitors - painkillers that have potential heart risks
- and silicone gel-filled breast implants.

Yes, the FDA is a medical organization. So what?

One step away from organized crime. That's what.

What is the solution?

"They" do not have any and "they" do not want any. Why, you ask?
Simple.."they" need their bogey men to use to trash fact based medicine,
and, if the FDA were operating perfectly, they would lose that.

IOW, "they" have a vested interest in keeping the status quo.

Simple. Clear, concise, robust, conflict of interest guidelines with
severe ramifications (dismissal) for failure to adhere. Many, many,
other organizations understand what conflict of interest means and how
to avoid it. It ain't rocket science.

Whenever I am festering with issues over things not functioning
as top notch as I expect them to be, I write out my own detailed,
step by step plan for effectively changing the dysfunction.   Then
submit the plan to people in a position to implement those changes
and enroll their assistance.

I find statements about *organized medicine* to be sour-apple,
just plain lip service, but *organized crime* to be something a person
at serious issue would be willing to demonstrate doing more with.

The people (researchers and holders of advanced degrees) in the FDA
that wallow in conflicts of interests know that what they are doing is
wrong. The people that allow that to happen (read the politicians and
administrators, all well educated people) know that it is wrong. The
tax-payers who are beginning to learn of the corruption know that it is
wrong. And everyone mentioned above knows how to fix it. I am doing my
part by making the corruption known in a public forum. The more people
are aware of this, the more pressure will be brought to bear on the
corruption.

First we must bring this corruption to light then we clean up the mess.
I am wielding the light. Those who must clean it up will do do.

Now that is an understatement. The public sees the FDA as nothing less
than an arm of the food and pharmaceutical industries. They see no
objectivity or fairness in these committees.
