Reading Sanskrit Improves Brain Functioning

By Brynne Sissom
The MUM Review
6.Feb. 2002

The physiological effects of reading Sanskrit are similar
to those experienced during the Transcendental
Meditation(r) technique, according to research recently
completed by Dr. Fred Travis, director of the
ERG/psychophysiology lab of Maharishi University of
Management in Fairfield, Iowa, USA.

Dr. Travis asked his test subjects to read passages from
the Bhagavad-Gita in Sanskrit and in modern foreign
languages (Spanish, French, or German). In each case they
could pronounce the sounds but did not know the meaning.
He measured brain wave patterns (ERG), heart and breath
rate, and galvanic skin resistance during two reading
sessions and during a 15-minute session of the
Transcendental Meditation technique.

He found that while they read Sanskrit their physiology
was similar to those measured during the Transcendental
Meditation technique, but significantly different from
reading a modern language.

Their skin resistance steadily increased during reading
Sanskrit and during practice of the Transcendental
Meditation technique (showing greater stability in their
physiology) but remained the same during the reading of a
modern language.

Their ERG alpha power and coherence during reading
Sanskrit were also similar to that during the practice of
the Transcendental Meditation technique, and both of
these were higher than when the subjects read a modern
language.

Dr. Travis said that these findings support Maharishi's
predictions on the effects of reading Sanskrit.
Maharishi, in Vedic Knowledge for Everyone, predicted
that reading the Vedic Literature as it flows and
progresses in perfect sequential order has the effect of
regulating and balancing the functioning of the brain
physiology and training consciousness, the mind, to
always flow in perfect accordance with the evolutionary
direction of Natural Law.

Dr. Travis found the similarity of physiology during
reading Sanskrit and the Transcendental Meditation
technique is especially noteworthy because one reads with
his or her eyes open and engages in active perceptual and
cognitive processes, while the Transcendental Meditation
technique is done with one's eyes closed and entails a
reduction of mental activity. This suggests that the
state gained during the practice of the Transcendental
Meditation technique may be integrated with active mental
processes by reading Sanskrit.

Dr. Travis said, "The Transcendental Meditation technique
takes the awareness to pure consciousness at the source
of thought. Seeing similar patterns of physiology during
reading Sanskrit as during the Transcendental Meditation
technique suggests that reading Sanskrit enlivens pure
consciousness at the source of thought and integrates
that state with reading and speaking. In short, while
practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique
locates pure consciousness, leading to the state of
Transcendental Consciousness, reading Sanskrit integrates
inner silence with outer activity, helping to cultivate
enlightenment."

I thought that hindus of India considered piss to sharpen the senses!

One who drinks Shivambu for the duration of a month will be purified
internally. Drinking it for two months stimulates and energizes the
senses. (11)

Drinking it for three months destroys all diseases and frees one from
all troubles. By drinking it for five months, one acquires divine
vision and freedom from all diseases.

http://www.hps-online.com/hindiasutra.htm

Since urine is emitted from the same bodily organ used in sex, perhaps
it was thought that by drinking one's urine one was swallowing some
sort of sexual energizer. In any case, it is unlikely that Indians some
4,000 years ago had scientific reasons for drinking their own urine.

Proud Indian custom.
Marcus Aurelius - 08 Sep 2005 10:20 GMT
A proud mohamedan habit really:

Muhammad said that camel's urine should be drank as medicine for those
who are feeling sick (Bukhari 1:234). He sometimes spat on his clothes
(1:242). He let people catch his own spit and then rub it on their
faces and skin (3:891). To someone else, he ejected a mouthful of water
on them (1:188). After washing himself, Muhammad would give his dirty
water to his followers to drink and smear themselves with (1:187-188).

That was for visiting hindu sadhus. The Prophet was trying to make them
feel right at home; and what better way than giving them a novel new
drink (similar to the one they drink in gallons) - camel piss

LOL.
Marcus Aurelius - 08 Sep 2005 23:34 GMT
As always, the defense of pisslam is a figment of imagination - using
absurdity to cover up absurdity.
No wonder you guys are so screwed up.

Before you drink your own urine you might do yourself the favor of
visiting the country and culture this practice is arising from today.
Just visit India and then decide. You will understand what I mean when
you get there.

Perhaps the Pakis secretly admire all who are, and all that is Bharatiya.

This is an aggressive hindu missionary group in america.  No serious
scientist takes seriously anything put out by this group of missionaries.

Let me know if you'll be coming to Hawaii; there's
a new Sanskrit Institute here in Honolulu that you
may wish to visit.

Near-perfect weather all year, warm, blue ocean, Hindu and Buddhist
temples, (mostly) healthy people and activities -- these are some of
the attributes of the 50th state.

DJM writes to Harmony:
"Near-perfect weather all year, warm, blue ocean, Hindu and Buddhist

This is hilarious. Mr. Harmony and Dr. Jai Maharaj (two rabid fanatics)
under the perfect weather and the warm blue ocean. A marriage in the
works? Or just a beach walk in langotis???? Atleast they are healthy
people, since they are both strict vegetarians.

Imagine the cry of the babes next year.

Considering your attitude toward all things Christian I am intrigued
that you as a Hindu would not prefer to live in the country and culture
that gave rise to Hinduism.

If anyone is considering Hinduism I would suggest you pay a visit to
the country and culture that has arisen from Hinduism's
influence...India.

> Reading Sanskrit Improves Brain Functioning

Conduct a blind test where different subjects (people) read different
sentences (of the sentences below) and compare the extent to which each
sentence affects brain functioning:

Sanskrit:      Devas adadat dantas; Devas dadat apidhanas.
Latin:           Deus dedit dentes, Deus dabit et panem.
Lithuanian:  Dieva dawe dantis; Dievas duos ir duonos.

The sentences are so similar* that it seems likely that if reading the
Sanskrit sentence without understanding its meaning affects brain
functioning in a certain way and to a certain extent, then reading the
Latin or Lithuanian sentence, without understanding their meaning,
would affect brain functioning the same way and to the same extent.

All the sentences have the same meaning:
(The/a) god gave teeth; (the) god will also give bread.

I have found reading the Bible to be more powerful than reading

You can get the Bible in Sanskrit, but it doesn't
read itself.  Probably too much work for someone
who doesn't even have time to put a candle in his
ear.  :-)

Yes, reading bible is very powerful. So powerful, it is lethal on the
senses , logic and intellect.
