I suffer from migraines and I read on this newsgroup recently about a
treatment called D.H.E. 45® (dihydroergotamine mesylate), which is
apparently a wonder drug.
What worries me, however, are the potential side-effects. Reading the
package insert (http://www.migranal.com/site2/DHE45_Ver218542.pdf) I
see that possible side-effects are:
Numbness or tingling in your fingers and toes.
Pain, tightness, or discomfort in your chest.
Muscle pain or cramps in your arms and legs.
Weakness in your legs.
Temporary speeding or slowing of your heart rate.
Swelling or itching.
I already have peripheral neuropathy, so I don't want to be taking any
drug which might make it worse. Also, I still have several amalgam
fillings and the other side-effects sound very much like mercury
poisoning.
My concern is that I might start taking D.H.E 45, suffer the
side-effects which mimic what PhD chemists say are the symptoms of
mercury poisoning, have my teeth out to try to solve the problem and
then find out that my PN doesn't go away because I am taking migraine
medicine.
What should I do? Should I have all my teeth out before I have the
drug which makes the PN worse or should I wait and perhaps take
pain-killers and anti-anxiety medication after the injection and have
my teeth out later.
While I am here, I have another question. My wife complains that I
speak before congress and then fall asleep straight afterwards when
she wants to speak. She mentioned something about research at the
University of Kentucky, but the only medicine I could find from
Kentucky was bourbon and it made things worse. Is there some natural
remedy for this?
One last thing - my son has kleptomania. Is there anything he can take
for it?

Your solution is simple. She need to divorce you and find a chap with
more staying power.

A younger man.

He should only frequent high-quality shops; a kleptomaniac will gain
much more fom David Jones (or Harrods if he can pick up tickets to
London) than he would from Kmart.

You won't be precribed DHE 45 unless you have a long history of headaches,
so there is nothing to wory about.(Of ourse you are not.) Most people have
never heard of it and I doubt that you had either. You did a search on it,
so you could make this post.

What symptoms aren't?

This is another herb-derived pharmaceutical. Ergot is a fungus that grew
on rye, and when ingested in bread caused a condition called ergotism.
That mainly involved spasm of the peripheral blood vessels. that could be
severe enough to cause people to lose their fingers and toes, but also
convulsions and other symptoms. (Yes, it caused just as many problems as a
herb as it does as a pharmacuetical)..
Ergotamine was the main treatment for migraine during an attack for many
years, but because of the side effects, it and other forms of ergot are now
only used when lesser measures don't help.
It does not cause peripheral neuropathy, that I can see. The numbness and
tingling described above would be symptoms of the slowed circulation from
vasospasm. I think you would need repeated doses to get that. But I am no
expert. Talk to a specialist experienced in its use, if your GP is unsure.
