Here is something unsettling from this article
(http://www.thebody.com/confs/aids2004/vanig4.html):

"When the authors analyzed the time trends from 1995 to 2003, patients
starting HIV medications after 1999 were more likely to achieve viral
load <400. However, this has not translated into a better clinical
outcome in recent years. The risk of progression to AIDS or death up
to one year after starting therapy has remained the same over the past
nine years. The presenter was also puzzled, and postulated that this
could reflect some changes in patient demographics over the years. "

Sounds like Concord Trial deja vu?

Sounds like a lot of people who started HAART forgot to also do lots
of anabolic steriods and pump up in the gym at that same time.

It's interesting that you mention anabolic steroids; there is another
article (http://www.thebody.com/confs/aids2004/pierone1.html) about
using low dose corticosteroid which can delay the use of HAART and
stablizes CD4 counts. It seems the major reason for the declines in
CD4 cells are hormonal imbalance.

Hmm...I have a friend, HIV+ and with sarcoidosis, who has used low
dose corticosteroid therapy for years--and he still is not on ARV. He
has long wondered about this association. Thanks for pointing this
out!
