Well it was in 1981, five young men were admitted for serious
pneumonia in various hospitals in Los Angeles, USA. It was found that
their immune system had broken down. They were therefore not
responding to treatment. Doctors were worried. No one was sure of what
caused the disease or how it was transmitted.

The new disease was named the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
(AIDS). The new disease that destroys the immune system was also
reported in various parts of the world. In 1984 French scientists
discovered the cause of the new disease and how it was transmitted. A
few months later an American doctor, Jay Levy was able to identify the
virus that causes AIDS.

In May 1986, the virus was named by an international committee as the
Human Immune-Deficiency Virus (HIV).

No one is quite certain about how the virus came to attack man. It is
however suggested that the virus was possibly passed to man by the
green monkeys for years.

Although the virus does not cause disease in the monkeys, it is
suspected that it found its way to the human body – either through
animal bite or through eating the meat not properly boiled or cooked.

Since AIDS was first reported in 1981 in the United States, the
disease has spread to all parts of the world. It is said to be a
pandemic because it is found in all countries of the world. It has no
cure. Once a person has AIDS, he dies after a while.

It was found in 1999 that 5.4% of the population of Nigeria had AIDS,
meaning that more than six million Nigerians had already been
infected. This is very serious and everything possible is now being
done to reduce the spread of this killer disease.

Dear youths, you must therefore know how to protect yourselves against
the disease. Remember you are not to play with sharp objects like
needles and blades you find around you. Do not handle another pupil’s
blood.

When you visit the dentist or the barber ask him to sterilise his
instrument before use. Avoid rough play that might lead to severe
bleeding. All blood for transfusion must be properly screaned. Your
parents must insist on screaned blood only if you need a transfusion.

How HIV is transmitted

HIV can be found in body fluid, e.g. blood and breast milk. When a
patient is given a contaminated blood, he becomes infected. It can be
found on sharp objects like needles, blades, clippers, forceps and
drills that come in contact with blood.

If the blood is infected with the virus, the sharp object carries with
the virus. If such an object is used without being sterilised, the
virus is transmitted.

The virus can also be transmitted from an infected mother to her baby.

HIV is not transmitted by

Touch, coughing and sneezing. You cannot also get it from sharing
cutlery, glasses, cups and food. You cannot get it by using the same
swimming pool, toilet seats, baths or showers. It is not transmitted
by mosquitoes or other insects.

How can one identify a person with HIV?

It is not possible to know by appearance that he has HIV because the
virus may remain in the body for many years without causing any sign
of AIDS. Only blood test can tell if a person has HIV. Youths, please
