For the seventh year in a row, rates of syphilis infection have
increased in the United States, driven largely by cases among gay and
bisexual men, according to a new federal report.
"CDC's preliminary 2007 data indicate that the rate of primary and
secondary syphilis -- the earliest and most infectious stages of the
disease -- increased by 12 percent between 2006 and 2007," Dr. Hillard
Weinstock, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's
Division of STD Prevention, said during a Wednesday teleconference.
Weinstock spoke at the CDC-sponsored 2008 National STD Prevention
Conference in Chicago.
The number of reported cases of syphilis increased from 9,756 in 2006
to 11,181 in 2007, Weinstock said. "This is the seventh consecutive
annual increase in national syphilis rates," he said.
Continuing with recent trends, 2007 statistics showed that men who
have sex with men accounted for the majority of syphilis cases in the
United States and contributed significantly to the overall increase in
the disease among men, Weinstock said.

The increase in the syphilis rates among gay and bisexual men is a
significant health concern, Weinstock said. "Syphilis, like other STDs
[sexually transmitted diseases], can increase the likelihood of HIV
transmission two- to five-fold. For individuals already infected with
HIV, syphilis can increase viral load, which can accelerate HIV
disease progression and the potential for HIV transmission," he said.

A long time ago, I thought like most people
thought... that homosexuals were perverted
child molesters. Today I believe this type of
thinking is the result of "homophobia". I'm
not saying that I'm not homophobic; I think
all "straight" people are homophobic to some
degree. But I think differently now.
When I read how gays, especially gay men,
don't seem to "follow the rules" of "safe sex"
behaviour, and especially when I see articles
like the one you cited above, I think how
really "normal" gay people are. Here in this
article is a powerful reason to believe that
gays, just like others who *think* and *feel*
as if they've done something wrong, (whether
or not it's actually true) ultimately allow deep
sense of guilt to dictate to them, to push them
and drive them to "do themselves in".
To me, such behaviour indicates a suicidal
bent at the very least, and at worst a hidden
inner desire to "take others like them" to the
grave. It's sad, because gays have nothing
to be or to feel guilty about... nothing! It's
just that most straight people say and do
things to make gays feel guilty. Straights do
this out of unfounded, unbridled fear. And
gays pay for it with such low levels of self-
esteem that they choose a slow, suffering
way to pain and their own demise.
Again I say that gay people have absolutely
nothing to feel guilty about merely as a result
of their sexual preference. We are all defined
by a whole lot more than just whom we'd like
to be with in the bedroom!
