HIV boffins prep another HIV vaccine.

A promising new vaccine that employs a two-punch strategy to combat
the HIV virus received preliminary laboratory recognition and is ready
for further development before it can be used on humans, a joint
project between Academia Sinica and the US' Scripps Research Institute
said yesterday.

Past attempts to combat HIV -- the virus responsible for AIDS -- by
increasing patient immunity have failed clinically, Wong said, but the
new vaccine tackles the problem in a different way with synthetic
chemicals called "glycodendrons."

I like the way the failure of the last HIV vaccine hopeful is played
down.  As we know, those who were given it are now MORE likely to
contract HIV than those who weren't.

Martin,

I know this nonsense is published. When testing the vaccination 20 people
from the non vaccinated group of approx 800 have been diagnosed HIV+
during the observation time while 23 people from the vaccinated group of
approx 800 people have been diagnosed HIV+. If a statistical test is
applied to these figures, you find that there is no signifincant difference
in these numbers. This means, the vaccination does not work, it's useless.
Nothing else can be concluded. There is no evidence, the vaccination does
any harm. Only an ill minded scientist can claim this. Well, in this regard
we might be close to the truth.

Check again... those were the prelim figures
(actually 21/24) for the Merck vaccine.  Later
it got a bit worse.  After all the participants in
the trial were included, there were 49 in the
vaccinated group who became HIV+, and only
33 in the placebo group.

The worst case was for the 778 male volunteers
who had high immunity to the cold virus used
in the vaccine.  21 were infected with HIV, as
compared to only 9 in the placebo group...

Sorry, you'll hopefully do better next time!
