There were 599 new known infections in Mississippi in 2006. Of those,
58 were in the South Mississippi counties of Hancock, Harrison,
Jackson, George, Pearl River and Stone.

There are 2,706 women living with HIV in Mississippi. Gay men account
for 2,658 of the 8,540 known HIV cases; 1,575 heterosexuals have HIV
and 629 patients have reported transmission via intravenous drug use.

The statistics reveal another alarming fact: HIV infection in the
black community accounts for 72 percent of the total HIV cases in
Mississippi.

Labels and stereotypes are especially problematic in HIV awareness. It
is neither a gay disease nor confined to intravenous drug users, as
attested to by the significant number of women and heterosexuals who
are HIV-positive.

There is only one way to catch HIV: risky behavior. Caution and
honesty are the best prevention.
