The THT (Terrence Higgins Trust) is the UK's largest HIV=AIDS=Death
charity.

Their definitions of HIV and AIDS are very 'wooly.'  Apparently the
term AIDS is "...rarely used.  It is more usual to talk of late-stage
or advanced HIV infection."

What's interesting is that the THT is funded by the UK government and
HIV drug companies, which no doubt explains why their definition of
HIV encourages the taking of HIV drugs.  They probably discourage the
use of the term AIDS because there's no drug treatment for it, so AIDS
offers no income for their paymasters.

They mention that people don't die from AIDS, but forget to mention
that people don't die from HIV. :)

<http://www.tht.org.uk/informationresources/hivandaids/whatarehivaids/>:
"HIV

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

HIV infects and gradually destroys an infected person's immune system,
reducing their protection against infection and cancers.

Initially, someone living with HIV may show no symptoms of HIV
infection as their immune system manages to control it. However, in
most cases their immune system will need help from anti-HIV drugs to
keep the HIV infection under control. These drugs do not completely
rid the body of HIV infection."

and

"AIDS

AIDS is short for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

AIDS is not a single disease or condition. Instead, it is a term that
describes the point when a person’s immune system can no longer cope
because of the damage caused by HIV and they start to get one or more
specific illnesses.

People do not actually die from AIDS; they die from the cancers,
pneumonia or other conditions that may take hold when their immune
system has been weakened by HIV.

The term AIDS is now very rarely used. It is more usual to talk of
late-stage or advanced HIV infection."

The effect is the same. HIV disease leads to a collapse of
cell-mediated immunity and highly increased risk of opportunistic
infections, a fact which you will discover for yourself shortly if you
are indeed HIV+ and living with less than 100 CD4 cells and doing
nothing about it.

AIDS is a term still widely and commonly used, THT's comments
notwithstanding. I suspect that is true in the UK as well.
