Since that new vaccine against the HPV virus that causes cervical cancer
became available, some advocates have proposed vaccinating gay men
because the same virus that causes cervical cancer and genital warts can
also cause anal cancer.
Not surprisingly, anal cancer rates among gay males have skyrocketed in
the last ten years, so the medical industry is lobbying for routine anal
pap smears (billed to the taxpayers), as well as routine HPV vaccinations
(also billed to the taxpayers) for gay men.
But what is the point of detection and prevention of HPV if the gay men
are going to contract HIV anyway? If anything, routine HPV vaccination
would only make the HIV problem worse. Gay men don't care about HIV
because the symptoms are not visible. But HPV causes genital warts, and
those gross out potential sex partners, so a vaccine against them is
very desirable, and it also means there is no longer any reason to use
condoms to prevent them, and therefore HIV transmission will increase.
