I'd like to understand as much as possible about HIV. Googling this group
did not reveal much (only old entries).

I am *not* interested in 'denialism' (unless references are answering
'denialism' statements).

I'm sure there are great books (and perhaps internet references) on the
subject. Consulting institutions only provide very basic information.

What should be my starting point?

Thanks
Peter

The statements:

I'd like to understand as much as possible about HIV.

and

I am *not* interested in 'denialism'

are not compatible.

"Chapeau!" (with the exclamation mark) is French slang for "Great!"

They are, if you follow all pathes of logic before posting.

If you follow all paths of logic before posting, you don't need anybody to
make you understand

I see at least three very different explanations how the above statements
can be compatible. Your answer simply is off topic. Please open a thread on
'denialism' and I might decide to answer - or post answers not requested
like in your case.

I think this branch should be ended here because signal to noise ratio
already dropped to 1.5/10.

Defining your question better. What aspect?

Viral structure? Viral replication cycle? Issues of pathogenesis? Cell
types infected? Impact on immune, endocrine or central/peripheral
nervous system function? Cellular effects? Effects on specific organs
or tissues? Clinical effects? Treatments? Access to treatments?
Political issues? Stigma? Marginalized populations? Epidemiologic
issues? Transmission? Orphans? Mother-to-child transmission?
Prevention issues--condoms, microbicides? The global response to the
pandemic?

And so on....

Difficult to answer for me. I think I want some basic knowledge of
Biology/Virology. How does a virus work? Impact on immune system? Of course
treatments and transmission (hazards) especially in presence of opporunistic
infections (herpes ?).

This site has a lot of that kind of information that Chris pointed you
to:
http://hivinsite.ucsf.edu/InSite?page=KB

There is a lot to learn with regard to basic biology and immunolgy.
These help to ground you in understanding the mechanisms and events
that occur after an individual is exposed to a pathogen (a
disease-causing agent such as viruses, bacteria or fungi).

There are some good texts on Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry and
Genetics that you can begin to review as well. A college bookstore or
library, for example, would have current editions to review.

The Hivinsite knowledge base is a good resource.
